Union College student held at gunpoint

Union College students Diane Molineaux and Chauncey Amundsen said walking on and off campus isn't always the safest. Hearing about a student being held at gunpoint Monday night has the two upperclassmen on their toes.

Molineaux said, "It has me a little scared to be walking around campus by myself."

Amundsen said, "I find it sad that it didn't surprise me that much. The fact that it was on campus is a little more frightening than the ones that have been off campus."

Campus police said a man with a hood and bandana approached the student around 8 p.m. Monday night near two of the residence halls on campus. The suspect then led the student toward the college center, but took off when he saw other students nearby. The student wasn't hurt, and nothing was stolen. Schenectady police are now handling the case and do not have many leads.

In a campuswide e-mail, the Dean of Students wrote, "The College has taken a number of measures to improve safety on campus in the last year, but safety remains a responsibility of everyone."

Molineaux and Amundsen said they couldn't agree more.

Molineaux said, "I try not to go anywhere by myself. I'm by myself now, but it's midday."

Amundsen said, "Try never to walk alone. Try to wear sensible shoes so that if you need to run, you can. Even the idea of having your hair down instead of in a ponytail so no one can grab you."

Spring break is just a week away, and school officials said they hope to meet with students, as well as neighborhood, city and county leaders when classes resume in a few weeks. The school hopes to continue to improve safety not only on campus, but in the entire community.
