It's been an empty spot for a long time, a little bit of an eyesore," said Alayne Curtiss, a Ballston Spa business owner.
The wait is over for Ballston Spa residents. Five years after the old Grand Union closed, a new tenant, Ocean State Job Lots, has arrived. The company sells close-outs and overruns and currently runs stores in five states across New England.
"At least we have someplace in the village that we can give some business instead of going to Saratoga or Scotia," said Sue Truax, of Ballston Spa.
"For this company to select New York and Ballston Spa, I think it speaks volumes about efforts of the village and the county to promote economic development," said Ballston Spa Mayor John Romano.
While all are happy that something is going into the old Grand Union, many people said they wanted to see a supermarket return to the village.
"If I have to run out and get something, we have nothing in the town," said Truax.
"I know, for myself, I have to travel at least 20 minutes to get to a supermarket," said Curtiss.
Romano said he wanted a supermarket and tried to bring one in.
"I've contacted every major food chain that I am aware of, trying to generate interest in that site. For whatever reasons, they opted not to go there."
But, Romano is hopeful Ocean State Job Lots brings new customers to its busy downtown. Building renovations are underway, and company officials hope to open by the end of the year.
