Police have arrested a man who they say stole a Hamilton County Sheriff's cruiser and crashed it while a deputy stood nearby.

Harold Wayne Russell, 39, of 1900 West Fork Road, is due in court today on charges of theft, obstructing official business and failure to comply with police orders.

Hamilton County Deputy Steve Sabers said he stopped a car driven by Anthony Rhodes, 41, of Dayton, Ky, for running a red light around 8 p.m. Thursday.

When Rhodes and Russell, his passenger, started to tell two different stories, Sabers said he separated the two, putting Rhodes in the car and Russell in the cruiser.

Investigators said Russell managed to crawl through the gate that separates the front and back seat and take off in the cruiser.

"At 8:39 p.m., Cincinnati Police Officers observed the stolen sheriff's vehicle on Colerain Avenue...A brief vehicle pursuit ensued onto West Fork Road where the suspect lost control of the vehicle and collided with a tree. The suspect fled from the crash scene on foot into a wooded area," said a sheriff's department news release.

The suspect was found around 9:30 p.m. by a Cincinnati Police K-9 Unit, hiding under the porch at his grandmother's house, 1915 West Fork Road.

Russell was also wanted on several outstanding felony and misdemeanor warrants, police said.
He is due in court Saturday.
