Dad pulls gun on coach over son's playing time

PHILADELPHIA -- A father pulled a gun on a youth football coach because his son wasn't getting enough playing time, police said.

Wayne Derkotch, 40, was arguing with the coach Sunday during a game of 6- and 7-year-olds when he drew the weapon, police said. No shots were fired.

Derkotch was charged with aggravated assault and other offenses. He did not immediately return a call to his home Monday.

A referee accused of throwing a punch at a man was also arrested on assault charges, police said.

Frankly, I think the coach had it coming. How dare they not give this kid, who's obviously an up and coming star, the playing time he deserves.

I was debating on where to put this. One one hand he is a bad parent for doing this, but on the other hand he is a good parent for trying to do the best for his kid.

Pulling a gun on a coach for more playing time for a six year old never makes you a good dad. Ever. It makes you a scumbag.

I guess you didn't pick up on the slight sarcasm there.

This just wasn't any old handgun though. It was a .357 Magnum I believe. The ref had the kids laying on the ground by the 50 yard line while this went down. Odd part was this guy had a permit for it. Don't think the permit covers peewee football games.

I'm pretty sure there's firearms laws regarding how close you can come to a school with a gun, with or without a permit.

I didn't think peewee games were school related. I didn't think school teams started until jr high and high school.

Can you imagine if the kid pulled out a 9mm in high school or something when his coach wouldn't let him play.

That's one thing. Kids are expected to be stupid. Once you are old enough to procreate, you should know better.

kinda goes along with my theory that you should need a license to have kids. you need a license to drive. a license for a dog. license for a bonfire in some spots. yet, the thing that takes the most responsibility above all else, being a parent, we let any idiot do.
