Former cheerleader sues school over fallout from sexy Halloween party pictures
(Court TV) — A high school cheerleader who was ousted from the squad after scandalous Halloween party pictures of her surfaced online is suing the school district for sexual discrimination.
In a lawsuit filed last week, 17-year-old Jaimee Bruno and her mother, Denise, claim that officials at Leland High School in San Jose, Calif., selectively took disciplinary action against her and four other cheerleaders after someone posted pictures of them dressed in lingerie costumes at a 2005 Halloween party on a Myspace.com page.
Shortly after officials discovered the party pictures, which depicted the teens among other students who were drinking and smoking, the five cheerleaders were suspended from the squad.
The suit alleges that the San Jose Unified School District violated Bruno's civil rights by disciplining her and the other girls while male athletes who were also depicted in the pictures were not punished.
Bruno's suit claims that the aftermath of the controversy forced her to leave Leland High School and miss out on senior-year activities. The suit, which seeks unspecified damages, also claims that the incident had damaged the teen's reputation.
A lawyer for the school district told the Associated Press that they had not been served with the suit, but that the district stood by its practices.
