Amish plan new school near site of slayings

NICKEL MINES, Pennsylvania (AP) -- The Amish community has decided to build a new school within sight of the now-razed schoolhouse where a man last month shot 10 girls and killed five.

Relatives of the girls, the teacher and school board members met at the Bart Township Fire Hall on Wednesday to approve building the one-room school on a parcel carved out of an Amish farmer's field.

Security measures have been discussed for the new building, including a chain-link fence, doors with peepholes and chains, and a paging system connected to police.

It is unclear whether any of the measures will be implemented or when the school will be built.

The Amish construct buildings by hand, without the aid of modern technology.

But they relied on an outside demolition crew to quickly bring down West Nickel Mines Amish School a little more than a week after Charles Carl Roberts IV carried out his rampage on October 2.

He left a suicide note, saying that he was carrying out a 20-year grudge and that he had recently been having thoughts of molesting children.

Shocking and humbling Roberts' family, members of the Amish community showed up to the killer's funeral and reached out to comfort his wife and children.

Since the shootings, 15 boys and two girls -- including one of the girls who was shot -- have been attending school set up in a nearby business.

I'd love to build something using no power tools, but the fact of the matter is that it isn't practical.

For them though it is pratical. They are not worried about making money off the build. Now will they used materials that have been made using current technology?

Well, I meant that I can't hang sheetrock without using a drill. I'm not about to use all wood on my walls.

I'm not sure how far they go with the whole zero technology thing. They very well may mill their own lumber and cast their own nails. I don't know much about the Amish, but from what I've seen at county fairs, there is old school ways to do everything we do today.

In Myth Busters they try to build some of the myths the same way they did in the old days. Usually they give up and use their mondern day tools.
