MADISON, Ala. (AP) — A Limestone County man allegedly used the Bible to justify raping a young woman over several years, with the abuse beginning when she was 11, an investigator said.
Sheriff's Department investigator Mike Boyles said Joseph Thomas Kriz, 45, was arrested Tuesday near the Swancott community and held on charges that include first-degree rape and first-degree sodomy.
Boyles said a 19-year-old woman reported the alleged sexual abuse Monday. He said she told investigators that Kriz, a 1996 U.S. Navy retiree, began sexually abusing her when she was 11 years old and continued to have sexual encounters with her into the summer of 2004.
"He had been brainwashing her over the years," Boyles said. "He read her Bible Scriptures to make it sound like what he was doing was OK."
Boyles said Kriz has lived in Limestone County for five years and that he lived in Huntsville before that. He said investigators will talk to Huntsville police about possible charges there.
