BOSSIER CITY, Louisiana. -- A pit bull puppy chewed off four of a baby girl's toes while the child's parents slept, police here said Monday. The parents were booked on charges of child desertion and criminal negligence and were being held in the Bossier Parish Jail pending an initial court appearance.
Police said the parents were sleeping on a mattress in the living room of their residence and the month-old girl was in an infant seat beside them when the puppy began chewing on their baby's toes.
Mary Shannon Hansche, 22, and Christopher Wayne Hansche, 26, told police they woke up to the sound of the baby crying, found her mangled foot and took her to the hospital about 8:30 a.m. Sunday.
"They did not see the dog injuring the child," police spokesman Mark Natale said.
The girl underwent surgery Sunday at Sutton's Children's Hospital in Shreveport. There was no way to reattach the child's toes, Natale said Monday.
The puppy was 6 weeks old and had no record of receiving its shots and will be quarantined for 10 days to check for rabies. Natale said he did not know what the puppy's fate would be after that.
"The puppy itself was just several weeks old! I mean this was essentially a puppy," Natale said.
"This puppy might have been trying to nurse on the toes of this baby," veterinarian Michael Dale speculated. "I know that sounds a little far fetched, but that's the first thing that comes to my mind."
Teresa Miller, who sold the puppy to the Hansches, was skeptical the dog did it. "He didn't chew on anything while he was with me. Out of all of them (in the litter), he was the least chewy."
Another veterinarian, Dr. Valri Brown, said if the puppy chewed off the infant's toes, it would not have happened quickly. "It would have to be a period of time -- maybe at least an hour," she said.
Meanwhile, the puppy's been quarantined at Bossier City's animal control office for the next 10 days to check for rabies. Natale said he did not know what the puppy's fate would be after that.
When she is released from the hospital, the child will be placed in a foster home until the case against her parents is settled, officials said.

Did the dog have blood on it's face, mouth, or teeth?

I'd have to guess that it did.

I would assume if the dog did it there wouldn't be a doubt in the policeman's mind. Unless the police are polish. But shit even I think I'd be able to tell.

It makes you wonder why people buy certain types of dogs when they have small children. I have never been one to say that a certain dog bread should be banned, because it has a lot to do with how the dogs are treated and trained by the owner. But if you have a small child and you buy a pitbull, what is your reason? Is it for protection? Is it for status? I had a greyhound before Amber was born and after she was born I decided to get rid of the greyhound because she was too spastic and might cause injury to the baby if startled. I kept the cats I use to have in the basement to keep the potential nasty cat stuff away from the babies.

I think having a mattress on the floor of the livingroom pretty much says it all as far as their social status. I'm sure they were homies.

I got a pitbull and got rid of it a week after I found out I was pregnant. Which I'm glad I did because I gave her to my bro, and she bit him. :disgust:

Because of this:
Police said the parents were sleeping on a mattress in the living room of their residence and the month-old girl was in an infant seat beside them when the puppy began chewing on their baby's toes. And I didn't mean black homies.

Couple that with these facts:
1. They didn't hear a baby screaming who was laying right next to them in a baby carrier.
2. Next to their mattress in their livingroom.
3. They actually owned both a pitbull puppy.
4. AND a baby.
5. They live in Louisiana. Just like Bobby Bouche from WaterBoy.

What the fuck...?
La. Mom Says Pet Ferret Ate Baby's Toes
La. Dec 20, 2006 (AP)— A woman jailed after four of her infant daughter's toes were gnawed off says the family's pet ferret did it, not their pit bull pup as police had said.
But her husband blames the dog, a city official said.
"The way the bite marks were on her foot, the ferret being out of its cage, I knew it wasn't the dog," Mary Hansche told KTBS-TV on Tuesday.
The month-old girl was injured Dec. 10 as Hansche, 22, and her husband, Christopher Hansche, 26, slept; they woke up when they heard her crying. The parents were jailed in lieu of $50,000 bond each, booked with child desertion and criminal negligence.
The husband had blamed the dog and told police the ferret had been in its cage all night, Bossier City spokesman Mark Natale said Wednesday.
The charges wouldn't change regardless of which pet was involved, Natale said, because the baby "was injured by an animal while in the custody of the parents." The girl has been released from the hospital and is in state custody.
Attorney Pam Smart said she is waiting for results of a hair analysis to back up the couple's statement that they were not using drugs, calling the case a "very unfortunate accident."

I don't think the issue is WHICH animal gnawed your baby's toes off, it the fact that an animal DID chew your baby's toes off.
Fucking retard.

And now they have 2 known dangerous pets, especially dangerous to infants and small children.

I'm a little confused as to how there was no blood in either of the pets fur?
And how can they pin this on an unfortunate event, even if the parents weren't on drugs they were not attending to their friggan child! Hello FOUR toes were eaten OFF, she must have cried at some point!
And no Billy it didn't make me happy that the dog turned on my brother, but it did make me happy that I got rid of her before she had a chance to turn on me or either of my kids. Dork.

I think they should have the dog chew off one parents toes and the ferrit shew off the otehr parents toes and then they can compare the injuries and see which animal did it.

UPDATE
BENTON, La. - A couple jailed after four of their infant daughter’s toes were gnawed off by a family pet will plead guilty to improper child supervision, the couple’s attorney said Friday.
Mary and Christopher Hansche, who were charged with child desertion and criminal negligence, will plead guilty to the lesser misdemeanor charge of improper supervision of their child, said attorney, Pam Smart. In addition, they will perform community service, attend parenting classes and give up their pets — a Pit Bull puppy and a ferret.
The couple’s month-old girl was injured Dec. 10 as they slept. The couple woke up when they heard the infant crying.
The husband had blamed the dog but the wife blamed the ferret.
They could face up to six months in prison, each, Smart said. They sill remain in jail pending a Jan. 3 hearing. In addition to determining how much, if any, jail time the couple will do, the judge will also determine custody for the baby.
Bossier Parish District Attorney Schuyler Marvin said he believes there were enough mitigating circumstances in the case to offer a plea agreement.
The baby was released from the hospital this week; she and her 2-year-old brother are now in the care of a grandparent.

And the parents will still get the baby back in the end.

Yeah it basically says the parents will end up with the kids.
Maybe it was just one of those weird mistakes. Stranger things HAVE happened.
Bill could EASILY sleep through a child crying uncontrollably.
