A Schenectady funeral home is suing a mother because she hasn't paid for her children's funerals. The Daly Funeral Home wants the money they are owed for the funerals of Nancy Self's five children. The funeral home is seeking $19,000.

The funeral home's attorney would like to collect at least what was raised through fundraisers. He says donations made to the fund were not used for funeral expenses, but were spent by the mother.

She has not answered the suit.

Five children died along with a sixth person last August when their Division Street home in Schenectady went up in flames.

$19K for 5 funerals is pennies.

They couldn't sue if she was paying something.

I think they could cut this lady some slack though. I saw her on the news last summer and she looked kind of poor.

Then she should have let the bodies turn to ash in the fire. She got the service, and money was donated by people for the funerals which she in turn spent on whatever she spent it in. Funeral homes ARE a business, they're not there for charity, they did their job and are even now only asking for the money donated by people, not even the whole amount. Not to mention this happened a while ago, they've probably already given her every oppurtunity.

They're not some money hungry corporation, probably a family owned funeral home who has to pay up front expenses on funerals, coffins, labor, etc, and needs to get that money back.

It's also against the law to raise money for funeral services and to spend the donated money on other shit.

She may have spent it on the plots, or the headstones. Funeral homes don't do that.

I agree with mindy, give the lady a break she lost 5 fucking kids.

Funerals are disgustingly expensive anyways.

I'm siding with the business end of this. 5 coffins alone should be at LEAST 20k.And thats for the cheap ones ,(like 4k). If anything it seems the funeral is probably just trying to pay off the expenses they owe other vendors..ie the people who make the coffins and provide services. Not to mention, its just wrong to spend donated money, specifically for funeral expenses,on other shit. That right there shows how much she cared about her kids vs her own needs. Id be pissed of i donated money to bury a helpless child, only to find out the mother blew the money on clothes or some shit.

Just my Opinion.

I doubt it, because first, they're not needed, you don't need to buy headstones, plus funeral homes can arrange all that shit for you, and it looks like she didn't pay anything to anyone.

I'd be fucking furious if I donated money to this lady then read this. People took out of their own hearts and wallets to help this woman. Had Cam died, and if people found out I spent the money they donated to me on trivial things rather than his funeral, or a scholarship like I had wanted (if this happened) I'd expect all our supporters to be pissed too.

I also side with the funeral home.

It's a little known fact that most funeral homes, even though they're under a family name and they seem to be "family run" are actually owned by a higher company... the same company that owns MANY funeral homes. I read an article in Consumer Reports that funeral homes are one of the biggest unknown monopolies out there. A monopoly started, and then, when the seemingly family owned funeral homes were able to charge much less (at first) for caskets and services, the ones that were not under the parent company suffered greatly. So because it's so hard to know that they're all under one parent -- many family run funeral homes signed on to this company... and now it's a monopoly. Then, the funeral homes steadily raised prices again, and now it's outrageous... but people don't know all this happened. And, people don't shop around when looking for a casket. Let's face it. So at their most vulnerable time... they're stuck paying 10K for a casket.

Funeral homes are outrageously expensive... but the way it works (says consumer reports) is that the funeral home charges you... they keep X amount of money, and have to report and pay to their mother company X amount.

For example, if a funeral home charges you 20,000... and expenses are say... 15,000... instead of having 5,000 profit, they have to give say 3000 to the parent company, leaving them only 2000 profit.

What's my point? This funeral home, if it's one that's owned by a parent company is probably just trying to recover it's expenses... like stated previously. The parent company isn't going to care if they got paid or not... so the family run company probably already had to pay their parent company... being out not only expenses but also the portion of the profits that they already had to pay their parent company.

I feel bad for these small funeral homes. I understand why so many people have the idea of "the lady lost her kids... let her be..." but still... business is business... it's just hard for the funeral home because of the touchy business that they run.

Not only that... I'm guessing that there wasn't caskets... seeing as the people died in a fire... I'm guessing they were just creamated... in which case... headstones aren't needed. Doesn't cost much for an engraved plaque.

Being burned in a fire doesn't mean anything.

Meh, even if they're cremated they make you buy a casket.

Catholics arent creamated till after the wake and funeral. A creamated body isnt allowed in the church. *shrugs* Usually with the creamations, they have an open casket or closed wake, then a service, then burn baby burn.

i dont wanna take up space when i die. plus people would notice you more on a mantel then blending in with thousands of other graves. cemetaries are pointless to me.

Mikey

My papa was creamated... he sat on top of my grams TV till we had him put ina mosoleum at the cemetary.
I think autopsies are pointless when theres a long disease... "she would want to die with dignity" yet, lets cut her into pieces to prove a point. Yeah. Makes a buttload of sense.

my papa was creamated and put in a mausoleum once the snow went away. My gram flew home from florida with his box on her lap. I dont think they neccessarily use urns anymore. Till he was laced in the mausoleum... He sat on her TV. It was creepy.
I dont care how Im buried, as long as Im with Bill.
