Hole Swallows Pothole Patcher
MANAYUNK-March 29, 2005 — For most people, the calendar says spring. But one city street crew couldn't spring their truck from the hole that opened up and swallowed it while they were patching a smaller pothole.
The crew had a rough morning on the job along Vassar Street.
Already, Philadelphia city crews have repaired about 9,600 potholes so far this year using pothole patching trucks and three-man crews. But one crew ran right into a big problem this morning. As they were moving their truck after fixing a hole on Vassar Street, a larger hole opened up, swallowing part of the truck.
The streets department has already identified another 1,500 potholes in need of repair and they expect thousands more before patching season is over in mid-May. The city will spend about $500,000 fixing potholes this year. The goal is get them fixed within four days. But the ones that remain – like this one at 7th and Walnut streets – are a nuisance drivers would rather not have to endure.
