Warrensburg students arrested for allegedly bringing weapons to school
WARRENSBURG -- Three Warrensburg High School students have been criminally charged for allegedly bringing weapons to school one day last week.
The three, two 15-year-olds and a 16-year-old, brought a set of brass knuckles, a folding knife and a weapon called a "smiley," which is a padlock wrapped in a bandana, police said.
Warrensburg School Superintendent Timothy Lawson said school officials received a tip that the students had brought the items to school on Jan. 24. When confronted, all three acknowledged they had brought the weapons and surrendered them without trouble, Lawson said.
The students would not say why they brought them to school, he said.
"The possession of them is illegal in the school," Warren County Sheriff Larry Cleveland said.
Details of the charges were not immediately available Thursday morning.
Lawson said the district took "appropriate action" toward the students, but he could not elaborate.
One person who said they were a parent of a Warrensburg student called The Post-Star to express concern that they were not told of the incident.
Lawson, though, said the school does not normally notify district parents of disciplinary measures taken toward students.
"These kids were not carrying these items from class to class. They had them in their lockers," he said. "There were no threats to other students."
Had their been threats, parents likely would have been notified, he said.
