Emergency contraception now available

ALBANY - Upper Hudson Planned Parenthood is giving away emergency contraception today at all its locations as part of a national Back Up Your Birth Control Day campaign.

The clinics in Albany, Latham, Troy and Hudson will give one free emergency contraception pill package to anyone who requests it and shows identification.

The package contains one packet of emergency contraception, medical information and instructions for use. It also includes two condoms, and information about emergency contraception, safer sex and Planned Parenthood services, clinic officials said.

Emergency contraception, also known as the morning after pill, can prevent pregnancy if used within five days after unprotected sex. The pills uses the same hormones found in regular birth control pills.

"Emergency contraception is backup birth control," said Marta Allen, Planned Parenthood chapter vice president for patient services. "It is a safe and highly effective method for preventing unintended pregnancy."
