NEW YORK - A Staten Island woman who was looking forward to celebrating her 58th birthday back home was found dead in Panama on Thursday. Panama police said it appears as though attackers beat Toni Grossi-Abrams to death before dismembering her body, putting it in a suitcase, dumping it near a soccer field and setting it on fire.

Grossi-Abrams, who lived in the Saint George section of Staten Island, was well known as a socially active philanthropist.

Grossi-Abrams was in Panama setting up a bed and breakfast, her friends said. They said they had warned her about doing business there because she didn't speak the language and might lose her money. But they never considered a fate far worse than that.

Police in Panama have detained a woman and two men, and are looking for two more people.
