NEW YORK - More than half of U.S. workers fail to take all of their vacation days, according to a survey released on Wednesday.

Of the 56 percent who don't take advantage of all their allotted time, a third use half or less of their time off, according to a survey conducted for Hudson, the staffing and outsourcing arm of Hudson Highland Group, based in New York.

One in five said they planned to take only long weekends off rather than full vacations, the survey also showed.

Many workers could be reluctant to take all their vacation time after experiencing bouts of corporate downsizing when their jobs may have been at risk, said Peg Buchenroth, senior vice president of human resources at Hudson.

"A lot of people feel they can't take time off," she said. "Either they have too much work to do or they're just concerned about their job security so they don't want to be absent.

"Or the work environment and the company they work for isn't really supportive of people taking extended vacations," she said.

The survey said one third of respondents get less than a week of vacation time each year, 49 percent receive more than 11 annual vacation days and 13 percent get more than five weeks of vacation time, the survey showed.

One in four workers overall said their boss expects them to be accessible while they are on vacation, and that number rose to one in three among managers, it said.

It said 58 percent of workers return from vacation more relaxed than when they left, while 21 percent said they come back to the office more stressed.

A majority of 78 percent rated their employer highly in terms of flexibility in providing time off for personal matters.

The nationwide poll of 2,082 workers was conducted March 30 to April 2 and compiled by Rasmussen Reports LLC, an independent research firm. The margin of sampling error was about plus or minus 2.4 percent.

I accrue vacation time. It's nice. Not like I fully take it all but you know how it is. I'd rather work then take a vacation - give me a day off here or there and we'll be ok.

For every 10 days I worked at my last job I accrued 8 hours of vacation time. When I left, I had 160 hours of vacation time built up.

This is why I am doing Primerica full-time now. I don't have a boss to answer to. If I want to take time off and go somewhere I just do it. There is no boss to not allow you to promote up because you took time off during the month. The promotions within in the company are in writting. You do the work you get promoted. That all there is to it.

In my three years at the current job, I have used all the time that I need for sick, personal and vacation. I currently have 260 hours (35.6 days) on the books. I love that part of my job. God forbid I get very sick, I'll have that time to use.

Dave do you have to use or will they buy it out if needed?

The number I gave is a combined total of all my current time (vacation, sick and personal). We also get floating holidays that have to be used within a year. We get 37.5 hrs of personal a year, unlimited sick (earn about a day a month - can be used to pay for health insurance at retirement) and can hold up to 300 hrs of vacation (same earnings as sick - amount of earning grows after 5 or 7 yrs of service). Some agencies have buy-back programs, I don't think mine does. I've never had the need to look into it.

You are correct. CSEA is used by certain employees of the state, but my union is SEFA. They actually suck at salary negotiations. 2007 is the last year of our contract. I hope they can negotiate a good one for the next few years.

i used to work in the scanroom at lockheed martin processing child support checks. the put me in charge of the rejected check department. typically i had access to one lil corner of a safe to store my checks in. i went on vacation for a week once, and came back to 3 safes work of work. basically no one bothered to look after my department for me while i was on vacation and my staff just twidled their thumbs all week. it was very stressful cause the contract mandated by the state said that all checks we got that day were to be processed that day, and they had state inspectors on site to make sure that happened. my job became about 10 times more stressful after coming back from vacation to that mess. and i quit like a month later. so i can totally understand how people avoid taking long or full week vacations. if i was still at that place i would never have done it again.
