Authorities in Phoenix marched more than 2,000 maximum security inmates to a new facility in their pink boxer shorts and pink flip-flops, according to a Local 6 News report.

An inmate march to a new jail facility is called inhumane by some of the marching inmates, according to Local 6 News.

The march from Towers Jail to Lower Buckeye Jail was called inhumane by some of the marching inmates. Also, some activists questioned the way in which the inmates were moved, according to reports.

Maricopa County Sheriff Joseph Arpaio said stripping the inmates for the walk was the right thing to do.

"This isn't a publicity stunt, this is their normal wear," Arpaio said. "What do you want me to do, put them in tuxedoes to move them?"

All inmates made it safely to their cells.

Arpaio let one of the inmates cut the ribbons to mark the opening of the new facility after the march.

The new facility holds more than 4,000 inmates
