SCHENECTADY -- Two police officers suffered minor injuries Friday when a man resisted arrest during a violent chain of events, authorities said.
Kendall Spraragen, 34, of 25 Lawnwood Ave., Schenectady, faces a series of possible charges, including felony assault and attempted robbery, police said. Late Friday, police still were determining the charges to file against Spraragen.
Officers were summoned to 155 Erie Blvd. at 11:30 a.m. after getting a report that a man -- later identified as Spraragen -- was headed there intent on killing his father, police said. At about the same time, police dispatchers told patrol officers the Trustco Bank at 320 State St. -- the rear of which is just across the street from 155 Erie Blvd. -- had been reported robbed.
While police interviewed his father at 155 Erie Blvd., Spraragen entered the home and officers attempted to take him into custody. Spraragen, police said, allegedly fought back. It took several officers and pepper spray to subdue him, police said. Officer Sherri Barnes injured her knee and wrist, and Officer Philip Feldhaus injured his hand. Both were treated at Ellis Hospital and released.
Police said they then determined that Spraragen was the same man who had menaced a Trustco teller with a folding knife and demanded money before fleeing out the bank's rear door and into police hands on Erie. The teller didn't know it was a knife at the time and Spraragen didn't wait for the money, police said. The incident allegedly began after the teller had refused to cash a check for Spraragen.
After police took Spraragen into custody and started to drive him to Ellis Hospital, he smashed his head through the back metal window screen and glass of the moving squad car, police said. Even with his hands cuffed behind his back, he managed to get most of his torso out of the car by the time it had stopped. Police said he was subdued and taken to the hospital in a prisoner transport van.
Once there, he was treated for a cut to his head from his attempted escape, said police spokesman Lt. Pete Frisoni.
