TROY -- A man claiming to be a former Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute professor was stopped after walking through campus Thursday afternoon wearing a bullet proof vest, a ballistic helmet and carrying a container, city police said.

The man was taken into custody for questioning. The container was cordoned off to check out its contents, police said. It was determined that the container posed no threat and the man who was not identified was not and had never been an employee of the school.

``Our investigation revealed that he was not a threat in any way shape or form and he committed no illegal acts,'' department spokesman Capt. John Cooney said. ``He was let go on his way, but advised of the alarm his appearance caused.''
