Desmond Dutcher lives just below 24-year-old Robert Bonelli, Jr. It's a two-family home on Liberty Street in the hamlet of Glasco outside Saugerties. Late Sunday night, police searched the home and found a lot of material they said was part of Bonelli's "lurid fascination" with the 1999 Columbine High School shootings.
Ulster County DA Don Williams said, "His interest in the shooting in Columbine in April of '99 was beyond, well-beyond what any normal person would have an interest in."
It was around 3 p.m. Sunday afternoon when Bonelli opened fire inside the Hudson Valley Mall in Ulster. He shot 60 rounds from his assault rifle, critically injuring a National Guard member and injuring a Kingston man.
Dutcher said, "There's nothing I can really point to that would have given you that idea."
In fact, Dutcher saw Bonelli just two hours before the shooting incident. He's known Bonelli and his family for nearly a decade and said he wasn't a violent kid.
Dutcher said, "I think that it was a cry for help because I don't believe that someone that knows how to use a weapon, a fully-automatic rifle gets off 50 to 60 shots and hits one person in the knee."
Bonelli is being held in Ulster County Jail without bail. He faces charges of first-degree reckless endangerment and first- and second-degree assault. The Ulster County DA said he could face more charges.
