BOULDER - One Boulder middle school has instituted a ban on PDAs. Not on Palm Pilots and other handheld devices, but public displays of affection.
Centennial Middle School administration says there is too much hugging going on and it's gotten out of control.
The students are not happy about it.
"I mean, how are you supposed to say 'bye' to your girlfriend?" Centennial Middle School eighth-grader Noah Hahn asked the Boulder Daily Camera.
The school has officially banned hugs in the hallways.
Students say administrators have asked them to high-five instead.
Centennial Assistant Principal Becky Escamilla said teachers were concerned about some students' behavior and asked for an official policy on in-school affection.
No students have been punished under the new rule and it is unclear what the punishments would be.
Most schools have rules about showing affection, according to Ellen Miller-Brown, the Boulder Valley School District's middle-level director.
Some Centennial students have started a petition called "hugs not drugs" asking the school to strike down the ban.
For now students will have to follow the age old adage of keeping their hands to themselves.
