Nun reels off list of banned curse words
Sister’s recital stuns students, leaves no doubt what she won’t tolerate
GROSSE POINTE PARK, Mich. - Sister Kathy Avery won't put up with swearing on the playground at her school, and she's not above repeating the offending language to make sure everyone understands which words she won't tolerate.
The principal of St. Clare of Montefalco Catholic School had students stay after a Mass last month and informed the fifth- through eighth-graders that she has a zero-tolerance policy for cursing.
Just in case anyone wasn't sure what she was talking about, Avery read off a list of the very words and phrases that she was banning.
"It got a little quiet in church" during her talk, she told the Detroit Free Press.
Some parents were shocked, but others applauded, the newspaper said.
"In a way you would think a nun would shy away from something like that, but she's very open with the children, very clear in her messages," said Margaret Roache, chairperson of the school commission.
Roache's sixth-grade son was there when Avery read the list of banned words.
"When I asked him to give me a sample of it, he said, 'Oh, no, I can't say it!'" Roache said. "I thought it was great."
A representative of the Archdiocese of Detroit declined to comment Sunday.
Cuss words aren't the only things that set Avery off. She's also banned the words "stupid" and "boring."

If I had a child in that system I'd be the maddest father in the world right about now.
I was raised with no swear words anywhere, as much as humanly possible. I didn't even know they existed until I was pretty old, around 10 or so. Maybe later than that, even. I went to a calvinist elementary school.
To think that a school official would do that just turns my blood cold -- and to make it worse, it's a Nun.
Well, we've got some strange Nuns here in Michigan, anyway. We had two (Dominican) Nuns go toss some of their own blood on some war planes (or maybe it was a missile, I can't remember) and hit it a few times with a hammer. I don't personally think that's within the charism of St. Dominic, but hey. Who am I?

Melissa's father mentioned Catholic School for our daughter when she gets older and he was advised very quickly that it would never happen.

I did some looking around, and I actually seem to hold a *minority* view on it. A lot of places are actually praising her for doing it.
I take a dim view of it, myself.
If I was a kid, and heard that, I'd be wondering at the new words and what exactly they meant. (remember my earlier post)
I'd probably go home and ask my mother, similar to when I asked her what "blow job" meant. I saw it on the wall of a public restroom, and I was so innocent that I thought it meant a fart. I was older than what I was in my avatar picture at that time.
You should have seen my mother's face.

I think it is definately possible to over shelter kids. I had a friend who parents sheltered him completely. He had no clue what the world really was.

I was wondering if you'd come up with that one :)
Dunno. Depends upon individual circumstances, I suppose.
I think it would have been more beneficial for the Sister to say they were intolerable, without having to list them.
I only hope she didn't do it actually IN CHURCH, that'd be even worse.
Oh well. Again, who am I? I really don't have to worry about that sort of thing (at least, not yet at any rate).

I think she did.

I'm hoping that's just sort of one of those inaccuracies people tend to make.
Like, my Church has the sanctuary, and a lot of other rooms, but the whole thing is called the Church, see what I mean?
I have a really hard time imagining a devout Nun saying those sorts of things right in front of the Sanctuary. That really blows my mind, if she did.
But, I'm kind of old fashioned that way.
(to a Catholic, the real presence of God is actually IN the Sanctuary, it's the holiest space in a Catholic Church.)

Maybe this was the Nun.

sounds like she was fed up with the language and wanted to make it perfectly clear. Good for her! I'm sure she won't repeat them again. Now she can kick anyones ass out that uses any of the words since she made it very clear what words aren't allowed. God knows what her intentions were.
On another note: I was watching the history channel the other day, it was on prohibition. Did you know that moonshiners used to fill missils up with whiskey and shoot them onto the beaches? :rotflmao:
