Muslim helps Jews attacked on New York subway

NEW YORK (CNN) -- A Muslim man jumped to the aid of three Jewish subway riders after they were attacked by a group of young people who objected to one of the Jews saying "Happy Hanukkah," a spokeswoman for the three said Wednesday.

Friday's altercation on the Q train began when somebody yelled out "Merry Christmas," to which rider Walter Adler responded, "Happy Hanukkah," said Toba Hellerstein.

"Almost immediately, you see the look in this guy's face like I've called his mother something," Adler told CNN affiliate WABC.

Two women who were with a group of 10 rowdy people then began to verbally assault Adler's companions with anti-Semitic language, Hellerstein said.

One member of the group allegedly yelled, "Oh, Hanukkah. That's the day that the Jews killed Jesus," she said.

When Adler tried to intercede, a male member of the group punched him, she said.

Another passenger, Hassan Askari -- a Muslim student from Bangladesh -- came to Adler's aid, and the group began physically and verbally assaulting him, Hellerstein said.

"A Muslim-American saved us when our own people were on the train and didn't do anything," Adler said.

Adler pulled the emergency brake and the train stopped at DeKalb Avenue station, where police came on board.

The 10 suspects, ages 19 to 20, were taken into custody, said Brooklyn district attorney spokesman Sandy Silverstein.

Askari was first handcuffed alongside them, but he was released when Adler told police he was not an attacker, Hellerstein said.

Alder was treated at Long Island College Hospital for injuries that included a fractured nose and a cut lip that required several stitches, while Askari suffered a black eye, Hellerstein said.

The suspects are to appear in Brooklyn District Court on February 7 on charges that include assault, attempted assault, menacing, harassment, unlawful assembly, riot and disorderly conduct, Silverstein said.

The New York Police Department's Hate Crimes Task Force is investigating the incident, and will determine whether the suspects will be charged with hate crimes, Officer Philip Hauser told CNN.

Disagree with the idea of "hate crimes", but it's very interesting that everyone was labeled with what religion they happen to believe.

Also extremely interesting that it was the Muslims that broke up the fight.

But what the hell, you can't expect a whole lot out of 19 - 20 year olds in this day and age.

I am against most religious things, but I would have no problem if someone said Merry X-Mas, or Happy Hanukkah, or Happy/Meery what ever their religion. Happy Satan everyone!!

Suspect disputes Hanukkah greeting prompted subway row

NEW YORK (CNN) -- One of the 10 people accused of an anti-Semitic attack on a New York subway train disputes it began after a passenger said "Happy Hanukkah," the suspect's lawyer said Friday.

Joseph Jirovec contends the fight on December 7 began when one of the Jewish riders directed a racial slur at a member of Jirovec's mixed-race group, attorney Peter Mollo said.

As the quarrel escalated, someone in the other group pulled a knife on Jirovec, Mollo said.

When police arrived, "they just listened to one side of the story and arrested my client," he said.

Earlier this week, Walter Adler -- one of the Jewish passengers -- said a group of young riders objected to his "Happy Hanukkah" greeting.

"Almost immediately, you see the look in this guy's face like I've called his mother something," Adler told CNN affiliate WABC.

A spokeswoman for Adler and his two female companions told CNN that people in Jirovec's group then used anti-Semitic language against them.

The dispute escalated to punches, resulting in a fractured nose for Adler, Toba Hellerstein said.

The fight drew media attention because a Muslim student from Bangladesh came to the aid of the Jewish trio.

Jirovec is Jewish, Mollo said.

Three of the 10 people arrested in the case appeared in Brooklyn Criminal Court on Friday and they are scheduled to appear before a grand jury January 7.

Preliminary charges include assault, harassment and disorderly conduct.

The police department said hate-crime charges are being considered in the case.

There are so many more reasons to hate someone than simply what religion they choose to follow.
