GLENS FALLS -- A Glens Falls man who contacted police Tuesday to report that two prostitutes stole $250 from him found himself under arrest instead, police said.
Arthur F. Sullivan, 63, of Apt. 5 of the Madden Hotel, was charged with the misdemeanor of patronizing a prostitute after he reported the theft to police, Glens Falls police Capt. Joseph Bethel said.
He told police that he met the women -- one black and one white -- Monday night at South Street Saloon, and that he offered the black woman money for sex.
She agreed and they went back to his apartment, Bethel said, with the other woman joining them a short time later.
They had sexual contact and Sullivan told police he paid the black woman $50, they left and he fell asleep. About a half-hour later they returned and woke him up, the black woman saying she had lost the money he gave her, and Sullivan gave her another $50.
He told police he then offered the white woman money for sex, paying her $12, but they did not have sex and he fell asleep again, Bethel said.
When he awoke Tuesday morning he noticed $250 was missing from his bill fold, the captain said.
Bethel said city police have made a number of prostitution arrests over the years.
But the problem was never to the point where women were standing on street corners soliciting patrons, he said. Much of it seems to be arranged in South Street bars, as Monday's encounter was.
Bethel said police will charge the two women if they determine who they are.
"We've got a larceny complaint and if we can identify them we'll arrest them," he said.
The black woman told Sullivan she worked as a hairdresser, had five children and was married to a man who worked at a local paper mill, Bethel said. The white woman was described as about 5-foot-4 with dark hair and a medium build.
Sullivan was released pending prosecution in Glens Falls City Court. He could face up to 3 months in jail if convicted.
The case is being investigated by Glens Falls police Officer Phil Lindsey.
