Caffè Lena named best small venue for folk music
SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. (AP) - A Saratoga Springs coffeehouse where such music legends as Bob Dylan and Don McLean played has been named the best small venue in North America by an international group.
Caffè Lena tied with the Freight and Salvage Coffee House in Berkley, California for best small venue in a vote at the International Folk Alliance convention held recently in Memphis, Tennessee.
The Saratoga coffeehouse has been staging folk music acts since 1960. Dylan and McLean played in the 85-seat venue early in their careers, and singers from Emmylou Harris to Ani DiFranco have also performed there.
Caffè Lena's manager says the goal remains the same since its founding -- to promote acoustic music from American roots.
The International Folk Alliance award recognizes excellence among folk venues that seat fewer than 250 people.
