7-year-old brings loaded guns to school

(CNN) -- A 7-year-old first-grader showed up at school Monday with two loaded handguns, Baltimore County, Maryland, police told CNN Tuesday.

One of the guns was discovered about 10:15 a.m. when it fell out of the student's pocket at Randallstown Elementary School, just outside of Baltimore, police said. The teacher immediately took the student to the office and police were called.

After police arrived, they searched the child's locker and found another loaded handgun in a book bag, Baltimore Police Cpl. Mike Hill said.

He said police believe the 7-year-old stayed at an uncle's house in Baltimore over the weekend, and found the guns there. Police believe he thought they were toys, he said.

"We don't believe the child had any idea that he still had the guns or do we believe he had any intentions to use the guns in a harmful way," Hill told CNN in a phone interview. Police believe the child got onto the school bus with both guns in his book bag and later discovered the weapons while he was at school.

Police would not comment on what kind of guns they were.

No charges will be filed against the 7-year-old, Hill said, but the uncle could face charges of child endangerment and leaving guns within reach of a child.

School officials called it a very unusual occurrence and would not comment on the status of the first-grader. Bringing a weapon to school carries a mandatory punishment of expulsion, according to Baltimore County Public Schools policy.

I'm sure he thought they were just toys.

Unfortunate about the Uncle.

The only class that doesn't have lockers in the Green Island school is Kindergardeners. I didn't agree with that. I also didn't agree with the whole changing of classes at such a young age either. Probably why the kids are the way they are today.

Our kids start changing classes in 1st, but its just like we did when I was a child. As a whole class to either art, gym, health or whatever.

We didnt switch classes till 6th grade.

Other than the art & gym class I did not change for actual classes until 5th grade. Ballston did that when I was in school to prepare the 5th graders for middle school where you are changing all the time.

Well right, when I was in Elementary gym, art, music and such were in other designated places. But we had cubbies in the class, and we had desks that held our books, and we always went in a single line quietly to the other class WITH our teacher.

With Green Island though the kids had a schedule. Like we did in high school. 11 minutes in Homeroom, then off to your next class for a certain amount of minutes...so on and so forth. They had lockers so they didn't have to carry all there books all day. They didn't have a desk. They didn't have the teacher walking them from class to class. And they had different teachers for each course. It was ridiculous.

I didn't switch classes like that until 6th grade. When I went into middle school.
