TROY, N.Y. -- "I don't know, I can't speak right now," said parent Brenda Wescott. "I just gave her a hug and told her, don't do that again."
It was a tearful reunion for two Troy families after 11-year-old Krista Smith and 9-year-old Jeremy Curtis were found alive and well. The cousins had been missing for about 12 hours when they were found Monday morning.
Det. Sgt. David Dean of the Troy Police Department said, "These things turn on a moment. You know, we were getting late in the day, and we were getting very concerned these children were gone overnight."
Wescott said, "They went to their school librarian's house. They lost track of time walking around, it got dark so they went to the school libarian's house and stayed there for the night."
When a neighbor saw news reports Monday morning of the two kids missing, she called the school librarian, who then called police around 9 a.m.
Charles Wescott said, "The parents don't want to make a statement, they just want to say that they're grateful to have the kids back. They don't understand why the librarian didn't call a little bit sooner."
"Imagine that a quarter mile from here, the children were safe, and we have K-9s patrolling very steep hills," said Dean. "We have helicopters in the air, always risky things to have going on."
And while Dean said there are definitely some lessons to be learned here, the most important thing is that the kids are safe.
Det. Mike Parro said, "The best resolution in the world, they're home, they're safe, they're not hurt, they're not harmed. Everyone goes home happy today."
