Before Adolf Hitler killed himself in April 1945 he explained to his aides that he was determined not to fall into the hands of the Russians — and land up as the freak exhibit in a Moscow waxworks.

As luck would have it, Hitler — or, at least, a waxen effigy — has now been put on display in Berlin, a short stroll away from his former bunker.

Thanks to Madame Tussauds, which has just opened a new affiliate in Berlin, Germans can at last view a realistic model of the Führer. The suspicion, though, is that he will bring nothing but trouble.

To ensure that the wax Führer does not inspire neo-Nazi pilgrimages, Madame Tussauds has cordoned off the dummy and imposed a no-touch rule. You can kiss Robbie Williams or even Angela Merkel, but not Hitler; nor can you pose for a picture with him. There are CCTV cameras and the London-based company has also taken the precaution of moulding a very shrivelled Führer. Unlike the Hitler model in London, he is shown as a distinctly unvigorous character: a hunched, brooding man sitting behind his desk, apparently contemplating whether to first poison his alsatian dog, Blondie, and then his wife, Eva Braun, or vice versa. Behind him there is a map of the Europe which his troops once occupied. It would take a very determined neo-Nazi indeed to get a happy snap before being hustled out by the security guards.

Times Archive, 1945: Hitler, The Times obituary
Few men in the whole of history and none in modern times have been the cause of suffering on so large a scale as Hitler

“We wanted to show him as he was in his final days,” said Meike Schulze, Germany manager for the Midway division of Merlin Entertainments. “We conducted a survey and found that most people said that he belongs to history and should be shown.”

There has been a wax model of Hitler on display in Hamburg for the past 60 years but it is a yellowing and barely credible version. Since it was moulded, there have been countless film versions of Hitler — notably in Downfall depicting his last ten days in the bunker — and younger visitors are demanding a closer match. The Berlin model is based on a three-dimensional reconstruction from 2,000 images.

“We were aware the figure would attract a lot of interest but we hope people will also pay attention to our other great exhibits,” said Ms Schulze. “It would be a shame if the focus were just on this one figure.” This is probably a vain hope: the 200 reporters crowding in for the preview barely took in the figure of Winston Churchill lurking nearby.

One key question being pondered by Berliners is what to do about the children. “Do we threaten to take them to see the bogeyman Hitler if they misbehave?” asked a father of two young daughters. “Or will it be that the kids kick me awake on Sunday morning and demand to go and see Hitler after brunch? I wish they had stuck to Robbie Williams.”

The Jewish community is divided over the decision to place Hitler in a museum that is essentially designed to entertain rather than inform.

“The confrontation with history should not be degraded into pure consumption and amusement,” said Lea Rosh, one of the moving spirits behind the creation of the vast Holocaust memorial in Berlin which, like the cemented-over and modestly signposted Hitler bunker, is only a few hundred yards from the Tussauds exhibition on Unter den Linden.

Stephan Kramer, secretary-general of the Council for German Jewry, is relaxed about the reappearance of Hitler in Berlin: “If such an exhibition helps to demystify him, one should give it a go.”

Dude. You have to go to one. Amy and I have been to the one in NYC twice now and it's awesome. They have a lobby you enter in and see a few of them. Then your groups gets into an elevator and it opens onto a ballroom. Everyone in the damn room is wax, but they all look so real. It's creepy. Sort of like when you're at a funeral and you're looking at the body. You're 90% sure the person is dead, but there's that slight chance they're gonna spring up and go BOOGIDA BOOGIDA.

We have a bunch of pictures from when we went. I'm sure you've seen the one of me with the Spice Girls and the Hulk.

I'm fairly surprised that this is in Germany. They have very strict anti-nazi laws over there. I remember a (news story) couple of years ago some idiot teenager had a message on his phone about white power or some shit and he was picked up by the police.

Wasn't Mr. MedicCook over there? Perhaps he could shed some light. Or I could look it up, but I'm lazy.

I've heard that, but I wonder if it's the practice and not the mere display. While it's distasteful, it's still a part of the country's history.

I have been to the one in Vegas which was pretty cool. In the gift shops they had wax customers.

As far as Germany, yes it is illegal to display any nazi items in the public or to to any hailing in public. We were told when we got there to not even joke around with that because they take it very seriously. Germany is not one to embrace the past and learn from it, they are instead trying to pretend it never happened and forget it.

Man beheads Hitler waxwork

BERLIN, Germany (CNN) -- A man raced into Berlin's Madame Tussauds wax museum Saturday and ripped the head off a waxwork of Adolf Hitler, police said.

Police said the 41-year-old entered the exhibit shortly after the museum doors opened and "made for the Hitler figure," scuffling with a guard assigned to protect it and the manager before tearing the head off the life-size statue.

The man was arrested and is now in custody, Berlin police spokeswoman Uwe Kozelnik said. He told officers he wanted to protest the figure being included in the museum.

Museum official Nathalie Ruoss said organizers would decide Monday what to do about the figure.

Saturday was the opening day of the Berlin branch of the famous Madame Tussauds wax museum.

The presence of the waxwork, which depicted the Nazi dictator sitting at his desk in his bunker shortly before he committed suicide in 1945, in the new museum led to criticism in German media over recent weeks. But the museum's defenders argued Hitler's role in German history must not be ignored.

Hitler was shown with a sullen expression, his head slightly down, and one hand on the desk.

Police said the man is now being investigated for causing damages and bodily harm -- the manager was slightly injured in the leg -- but that he would probably be released later in the day.

Berlin is the eighth wax museum for London-based Madame Tussauds, known for its lifelike waxworks depicting famous people including celebrities, politicians, sports stars, artists, and scientists.

Famous Germans included in the exhibits are Chancellor Angela Merkel, scientist Albert Einstein, composer Johann Sebastian Bach, and tennis champion Boris Becker.

Wax Hitler to return to museum after head repairs

BERLIN (Reuters) - A waxwork of Adolf Hitler will return to Berlin's new Madame Tussauds as soon as experts have restored the head ripped off by a demonstrator on its opening day, the museum said on Monday.

Just minutes after the museum opened its doors to the public on Saturday, a 41-year-old man scuffled with security guards and leapt over a rope barrier into the dark corner where the dummy of a despondent-looking Hitler was seated. Shouting "No more war! he proceeded to tear off the head.

The man, arrested but later released under investigation, told Germany's Bild am Sonntag newspaper he was angry about the exhibit; but in the end he carried out the attack to win a bet.

The Hitler waxwork has unleashed a storm of protest in Germany where public displays of Nazi memorabilia or symbols are generally banned.

Critics argue it is tasteless and inappropriate to display a replica of the man who unleashed world war and ordered the extermination of Europe's Jews in a place mainly aimed at light-hearted entertainment.

Some even warn it could attract neo-Nazis who want to pay homage to the Nazi dictator.

But Madame Tussauds defended its decision to show Hitler on Monday and said it would reinstate the 200,000 euro ($313,220) figure once it had been put back together, a process which could take weeks.

"Hitler represents a significant part of the history of Berlin which cannot be denied," the museum said in a statement.

The museum said it respected other people's opinions and had taken great care to portray the dictator in a sensitive manner.

The figure was depicted at a table in a gloomy mock bunker just a few hundred meters from the site of the original bunker.

"We are now considering structural changes to make sure something like this cannot happen again," said a spokesman for the museum. Erecting a reinforced glass or plastic screen to protect Hitler might be one possibility.

The decapitation attracted some praise.

"At last a successful attack on Hitler," said Henryk Broder, a columnist for Der Spiegel.

Wax Hitler returns to museum after beheading
Former Berlin police officer said he tore off statue's head to win a bet

BERLIN - A restored waxwork of Adolf Hitler has returned to Berlin's Madame Tussauds after a demonstrator ripped off its head when it went on show two months ago, the museum said on Sunday.

Minutes after the museum opened in July, a former Berlin police officer scuffled with guards and leapt over a rope before tearing off the head of the wax model of the Nazi leader.

Madame Tussauds said the figure had been returned to a room featuring a mock bunker, where visitors could see the figure from behind glass windows, but not touch it.

The waxwork shows a despondent-looking Hitler staring in front of him, his hair slightly disheveled.

The wax Hitler had sparked a heated debate in Germany even before it went on display in July. Critics argued it was tasteless to display the replica of the man who unleashed World War Two and ordered the extermination of Europe's Jews.

Madame Tussauds said the museum avoided politics.

"As we've explained from the start, Adolf Hitler stands for a significant part of German history and his waxwork therefore is a legitimate part of our exhibition, which we had confirmed through local polls," the museum said in a statement.

The 41-year-old who beheaded Hitler had shouted "No more war!" as he tore off the head.

He told newspapers later he was angry about the exhibition but he had carried out the attack to win a bet.
