ALBANY -- A Pinehurst Avenue woman fought off a would-be rapist Feb. 10, biting and poking him in the eye after he slipped into her apartment through a kitchen window, police said.
The 26-year-old woman was not seriously hurt in the incident, which happened about 10:30 p.m. at her apartment on Pinehurst just off Western Avenue, said Detective James Miller, a spokesman for the Department of Public Safety.
The sleeping woman awoke to noises and went into her kitchen, where she discovered the man climbing through a window, Miller said.
The attacker grabbed her, covered her mouth and pulled her into the bedroom, where he tried to sexually assault her, Miller said. But the woman fought back, biting him and poking him in the eye. That bought her enough time to escape to seek help from an upstairs neighbor while the attacker apparently fled back out the kitchen window.
Miller said detectives are going through lists of nearby sex offenders and trying to determine whether the woman was targeted or if it was a random assault.
"There's a possibility that he might have been there to burglarize the place," and simply took advantage of the situation, Miller said.
It wasn't clear whether the window had been locked.
