McDonald says Assembly has failed to keep citizens safe
Assemblyman Roy McDonald, R-Wilton, says sex offenders should not be living anywhere near you and me.
McDonald says the state Assembly has failed to make citizens safer. So he's asking Saratoga County to take the lead.
Just a couple months ago, Malta residents were up in arms over news that four high-level sex offenders were living near them.
McDonald says the county should take steps now to avoid those problems in the future.
“We want to send a message to people that if you're a Level 3 or any of these categories, Saratoga County is not the place you want to come to,” McDonald said.
The assemblyman says the state Assembly is failing citizens by not placing more restrictions on paroled sex offenders. So he says it’s up to counties to send a message to the predators that they're not welcome here.
“Not just near the school. Not just near the community center or the churches. The whole town is off limits. The whole county,” McDonald said.
He's taking his message to the Saratoga County Board of Supervisors -- urging them to form a sexual predator task force and encourage them to buy GPS tracking devices so law enforcement knows where predators are at all times.
The issue surfaced in February when word came that four Level 3 sex offenders were living in a five-room motel in Malta. Now just one lives here.
So where should paroled sexual predators go? McDonald suggests building a barracks-like homeless shelter near the Saratoga County Jail.
Good idea, bad location says Sharon Nesstler. A grandmother of two small children, Nesstler lives just down the road from the county jail.
"The jail people, you know they're under control. The predators, they could just go any place they want to. I don't want them in my backyard,” Nesstler said.
McDonald will share his ideas with the full county board Wednesday.
