Cops find shotgun near school

ALBANY -- Police responding to a possible after-school fight Tuesday at Philip Livingston Magnet Academy saw an adolescent boy handling what might have been a sawed-off shotgun in a nearby basement, authorities said.

Though the boy escaped, police recovered an unloaded 12-gauge shotgun with the stock sawed off into a pistol grip, said Detective James Miller, a spokesman for the Department of Public Safety. The gun was found just inside the basement entrance to 386 Livingston Ave.

It's not clear, he said, to whom the shotgun belonged, who the boy was or what he intended to do with it. "It wasn't loaded, so he wouldn't have been able to use it unless he had shotgun shells," Miller said. "It appears these kids knew the shotgun was there. How they knew it was being kept there is the question."
