Falls police say woman put up racist sign

NIAGARA FALLS—Two days after a man was sentenced to probation and community service for putting up a sign as a “joke” in a public works garage that said “whites only” on a drinking fountain, city police were called to a home in the 600 block of 25th Street on Sunday to investigate another racially charged sign.

This one was clearly no joke.

No charges were filed Sunday, but police told the woman she must take down the handwritten sign on a fence on her property saying, “I rent three bedrooms [at her address to] white people Niagara Falls.”

The 53-year-old woman told police she put up the sign after someone tried to break into her house and added, “I can do what I want. I live in America,” according to a police report.

Police said they received complaints and she must take the sign down. An officer at the scene said the woman agreed to take down the sign under protest. The officer said the woman already had seven more signs she was planning to hang up.

she was looking for attention and trouble, it's so obvious. If someone doesn't wanna rent to someone, they don't have to, but common sense tells us not to offer our reasons why out loud and so bluntly. she got her 15 minutes of fame and then some. dumb bitch.

I disagree. She may be a busy woman, and don't want to take the time to weed out the people as she interviews them. This simply just makes the process of renting the place out easier.

It's the same as saying "no pets" or "only non smokers" ... whatever.

no can do that in America missy. :toetap: gotta go with the "dont ask, don't tell" theory on the rental selection.

I'm no landlord, but there would be very strict criteria in my head of who would and wouldn't live on my property. I wouldn't publish them because that opens you up to lawsuits under the stupid equal rights laws. I wouldn't let any homies live in my places, period. Black or white. Proof of sufficient legal income would be necessary. Also, I would never let myself be like these landlords on the court shows by being surprised by damage when a tenant moves out. I'd do a walkthrough of the property every 6 months or so. The rent would be due on the first of the month. On the second of the month, the late fees start. On the third the eviction proceedings would be started.

I'd be a landlord that someone either loved or despised.

if and when i start shopping for a roommate, i know what kind of person i'd want to be living there. i wouldn't advertise down to the nitty gritty, but i would keep looking until i found someone i was comfortable with.

and bill, i think there are certain laws around eviction proceedings, you'd have to wait a certain period of time by law.

My last landlord had that rule and I looked it up then. If the rent is three days late, you have to serve a letter stating they have 72 hours to pay or leave. After that three days, eviction papers can be served. They can have you out of the apartment by the 14th if they do it right.

This woman ... from how I understand it ... is just renting a room. That tells me that she will also be living there. And she should have the right to advertize what shes looking for in a renter. She didn't use the term nigga ... or kike ... or whatever. She wasent being offensive. She wasent only renting to crackers.
So ... bottom line is ... whats more offensive. Being told up-front whats shes looking for ... or having a black family turned away with the excuse of "your not what I'm looking for" when meeting with her ???

ESA giving more money to students
The ESA Foundation today announced via press release that the foundation will be doubling its annual scholarship program for women and minority students pursuing careers in game development from 15 to 30.

The program, now in its third year, will provide $90,000 in assistance for those seeking development-related degrees. Interested applicants can apply online for a $3,000 scholarship for the 2009-10 academic year at http://www.theesa.com/foundation/scholarship.asp.

In these rough times, students need all the help they can get. This is definitely going to score points in the media and in Washington.

well, let's see...

being told up front they aren't welcome because they're black, (or jewish, or whatever).

or being told they felt someone else they interviewed would be a better fit.

I suppose ... it all boils down to the same result.
I just think that it's wrong to have to "sugar coat" every move we make, and everything we say.

It's called basic human decency. There's a difference between overly crazy politically correctness and simple, "common" decency.

Elaborate.
Like when you said you would not have any homies in your apts, whatever color they happened to be. That's simple prudence. I mean, you're not going to have a huge sign out front that says "no goddamn homies, yo!"... uh, I think I lost track of my train of thought.

It's difficult to explain because I don't have a handy example.

a handy example of crazy over political correctness.

Wouldnt that be something like what this Amos, Imus whatever guy calling the basketball team nappy headed ho's????

well, I can see where that was legitamate. I mean, people didn't like what he was saying, and now he's out of a job (if I remember right). That's the free market system at work.

a better example would be the college student yelling out his dorm window at a bunch of other students, while he was trying to study, "be quiet, you bunch of water buffalo" and getting in trouble because they didn't like it. That's going a little overboard, I think.

dunno. hard concept to illustrate, because it goes directly towards intent, and that's a hard thing to deal with because it's near impossible to tell. Does this make sense?

if she wasn't CHARGING someone to stay in her home, then she could say what she wants, but when charging/renting/selling, it is against the law, has been for some time now. I do believe it came around in like the 70's or something, that you couldn't even ask a realtor if a place he's gonna show you is in the black part of town, poor side, bad side, whatever....you have to do the wink wink thing when house hunting.
