BURBANK, Calif. (CBS/AP) Amy Beck, a teacher at David Starr Jordan Middle School, is being accused of having sex and oral sex with a 14-year-old student.
The 33-year-old English and social science teacher is scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday on four counts of unlawful sex with a person under 16, and one count of oral copulation with a person under 16, according to Contra Costa Times.
Beck was booked on suspicion of lewd or lascivious acts with a child of 14 or 15 years and was held on $400,000 bail, Burbank police Sgt. Robert Quesada said to CBS affiliate KCAL.
"She said she had sexual relations with one of her students," Quesada said. Police interviewed the boy "and confirmed that the acts did occur" between March and September of 2009.
Burbank police spokesman Keith Sterling told The Associated Press the boy was 14 at the time. Prosecutors say the married mother of three faces up to seven years in prison if convicted of all charges.

One has to wonder why there are so many cases of inappropriate teacher/student relations. In a way, teachers serve as a student's parent away from home, so it's obviously a gross breach of trust to abuse that relationship.
Yet literature and society have a way of romanticizing teacher/student relationships. In Little Women, Professor Bhaer is a wise and benevolent character who eventually marries the heroine (though to be fair, he didn't teach Jo in a classroom setting). And in Anne of Green Gables, nobody found it objectionable that Mr. Phillips was courting Priscilla Andrews.
And in May 2009, a Seattle bar hosted a "Hot for Teacher" night hosted by Mary Kay Letourneau and her former student Vili Fualaau. According to AP, the bar owner argued that she had already served her sentence and that they deserved to have some fun on a Saturday night.
With so many cases of teacher/student misconduct on the rise, it's especially important for teachers to take precautions to ensure the safety of the students. Such precautions can include leaving the door open during office hours and not meeting with students outside the classroom unless it's to discuss course material. It also helps to keep parents in the loop about what material is being covered and what goes on in the classroom. This helps to assure parents that their kids are safe and in good hands.
Hopefully cases like Amy Beck will not become too commonplace in our classrooms.
