SCHENECTADY -- A 23-year-old man has been charged with felony attempted robbery after he allegedly tried to snatch two purses off a woman's shoulder Wednesday morning as she walked down Wendell Street.

Frederick Berg of 1054 University Place was sent to Schenectady County Jail without bail after police say he tried to swipe the purses while riding past the woman on a bicycle at 9 a.m.

But the woman, who was walking to her car on the 1000 block of Wendell, refused to let go, forcing him to ditch the bike and starting a struggle. Berg allegedly fled without the purses when she refused to relent, police said.

While officers spoke to the victim, a woman approached and said the bike on the ground was hers and had been stolen. Following up later, police heard a commotion coming from her apartment at 1054 University Place. The woman answered the door and said only she and her infant were home. Police said the woman allowed officers to search the place and they found Berg, who matched the description of the would-be purse robber, cowering in a crawl space.

Berg was charged with third-degree attempted robbery. The woman was not charged.
