A 45-year-old woman was beaten up, stripped, tied to a pillar and left in that state for an hour by her neighbour who wanted to teach her a lesson, police in Orissa said on Saturday.

At least 11 people, including five women, have been arrested from the crime.
Jambubati Devi, a resident of Bheden village in Bargarh district, had for long been on bad terms with her neighbour Urmila Senapati.

On Friday, Jambubati, along with her family members, spread the rumour that Urmila - a mother of seven - had 'sacrificed' an infant.

They dragged Urmila out of her home, police officer Mihir Panda said. They tied her to a pillar on the outskirts of the village, beat her and left her there after stripping her naked, police said.

"Some people informed us about the incident. We rushed to the spot and rescued the woman," Panda said. By the time police reached, it had already been an hour.
