The El Dorado, located on 121 fourth Street in Troy, was closed leaving 10 residents without a home.
According to Jeff Buells from Troy City Hall, The El Dorado was the main target, however, there were apartments above the bar where about 10 people lived. Due to the whole building being closed, these residents have till February 22nd to find a new home.
The El Dorado is owned by a Mrs. Elda Abate. Abate also owns the Elda's Nightclub in Troy and Elda's on Lark Street in Albany.
The El Dorado was closed due to two violations of the Nuisance Abatement Law. The first violation was in December of 2001 for drug violations.
In the summer of 2004, a judicial hearing took place and it was decided that the building is to be shut down for one year.
"Mrs. Abate is acting as if she is being picked on by the nuisance abatement law," Troy Deputy Major Dan Crawley said, "Unfortunately it is the people in the City of Troy that have been picked on by the constant nuisances taking place at the El Dorado. By this act alone the quality of life in downtown Troy will improve exponentially."
Abate had 3 months to notify her residents to relocate. However, when Troy Police showed up at the residence, this came as quite a shock to the residents.
"At 4 p.m. this afternoon, Troy Police officers came and knocked on everyone's door and said we had to move out," resident Arthur Hobbs, said.
Elda's in Troy, located at 122 Fourth Street was also shut down for six months by the State Liquor Authority for underage drinking.
