HOUSTON (Reuters) - Three people died, including the killer, and four were wounded in a wild shooting spree on Thursday at the Smith County courthouse in Tyler, Texas, officials said.
Gunman David Hernandez Arroyo apparently was angry about a child support ruling and fired dozens of rounds from a rifle before fleeing in his vehicle while exchanging fire with police, who then pursued him, police said in a news conference.
He was shot and mortally wounded in the running gun battle that went on for several miles, they said.
The dead included a woman identified as his ex-wife, who he confronted at the courthouse, and a man who tried to intervene.
"There are two that are confirmed dead outside the courthouse, a male and a female," said Tyler Police Department spokesman Don Martin.
Four people were wounded, including three police officers, police said.
Nathan Hoffman, an attorney with an office near the courthouse, told the Tyler Morning-Telegraph newspaper that he saw the shooter "just running down the street shooting."
"I saw people lying everywhere that had been shot," he said.
Tyler is located 90 miles east of Dallas.
