A teenager has been charged with causing the death of her 17-year-old friend in a January car crash in East Greenbush, and for driving without a license or permit.
Hilary Regan, 16, of 64 Highland Drive in East Greenbush, was charged Monday afternoon with criminally negligent homicide, driving without a license, and driving at a speed unreasonable for conditions. According to police, Regan often drove a car, even though she was not licensed.
"In this case, the complete licensing process was effectively ignored, evidenced by regular and frequent car trips, all while driving unlicensed," Police Chief Christopher Lavin said in a release.
On January 20th, Regan was driving two friends to Columbia High School in her older sister's car, when it slid off the slick road, hitting a tree. Alyssa Bouchey, 17, was killed as a result of the accident, and Alexa Paegelow, 17, was injured in the crash.
Regan appeared in the Town of East Greenbush Court at 4 p.m. on crutches. Her attorney said Regan broke her pelvis in the accident and has been emotionally and physically affected by the accident.
Regan's older sister, Abby Regan, 19, was also in court. She was arraigned on charges of unlawfully dealing with a child, and reckless endangerment. Abby Regan allowed Hilary to take her car, and that was the vehicle involved in the accident, according to police.
"January 20th was only one of many occasions that Hilary Regan had evaded the state's graduated licensing law," said Chief Lavin.
Regan was released on $7,500 bail, and the case is scheduled to go to grand jury. The court date has not yet been determined.
