2 teens charged; robbery victim, bystanders were hit with gunfire, cops say
SCHENECTADY -- Two teenage boys were arraigned Tuesday on charges that stemmed from a shooting Feb. 22 that left three men injured by gunfire, police said.
The teenagers -- Javon McDaniel and Tyron Jackson, both 17 -- tried to rob a man before McDaniel opened fire, police said. The robbery victim and two nearby pedestrians were shot.
McDaniel, of Hulett Street, was charged with three counts of second-degree attempted murder and one count of first-degree robbery, according to a news release from Lt. Pete Frisoni, a city police spokesman. Jackson, of Westover Place, was charged with first-degree robbery.
Police targeted McDaniel and Jackson from information obtained during an unrelated investigation by detectives. They were arrested Monday evening as they walked together on Emmett Street. The weapon used in the shooting has not been recovered.
The shooting occurred about 1:30 p.m. at Craig and Emmett streets. According to the release, the day unraveled as Bernardo Paredes, 32, walked on Emmett near Craig. Paredes, an Albany resident who was unfamiliar with the neighborhood, had just left a friend's house on Albany Street to walk to a State Street bus stop to return to Albany.
He took a wrong turn and ended up on Emmett. While at the corner of Craig, police said McDaniel and Jackson approached Paredes to rob him of the gold chain he was wearing. Police also say McDaniel pointed a handgun at Paredes while Jackson removed the chain.
Police said Paredes then tried to run when they attempted to steal his cellphone.
That's when, according to Frisoni's release, McDaniel fired several shots. One struck Paredes in the leg. Others hit Robert Henderson, 36, and Clifford Lawrence, 49, both Schenectady residents who had been walking nearby.
Police said McDaniel and Jackson ran, as did Paredes, who went to a home on Albany Street, and Lawrence, who went to the Department's Traffic Services building at Albany and Craig streets with wounds to both legs. Henderson collapsed at the scene with leg and back wounds. Paredes and Lawrence have since been released from hospital care. Henderson is still hospitalized, but it was not clear where Tuesday night.
Both McDaniel and Jackson were arraigned Tuesday morning in Police Court and taken to Schenectady County Jail. Bail information was not available.
