E-mail a new lead in disappearance
Author claiming to be "Audrey" sends note to Herron friends' Web site

CATSKILL -- In yet another lead in the disappearance of nurse Audrey May Herron, State Police have contacted Canadian authorities in an attempt to trace the sender of an e-mail purporting to be the missing mother of three.
"There is no reason for us to believe" Herron is living in Canada, Investigator Bill Fitzmaurice of the Catskill State Police said Thursday.

But since Oct. 8, when the e-mail popped up on a Web site created by Herron's friends, police have been interested, he said.

"It was something we wanted to check and something we should check," he said.

Several Canadian newspapers have written stories about Herron this week after Canadian police put out a news release, Fitzmaurice said. Close friend Marie Parker has talked to Canadian reporters.

Herron, a licensed practical nurse, was 31 when she vanished on Aug. 29, 2002, after finishing her shift at 11 p.m. at the Columbia-Greene Long Term Health Care Facility in Catskill. She said goodbye to co-workers and drove off in a 1994 black Jeep Grand Cherokee, heading for home in Freehold, Greene County, about 12 miles away. Neither she nor her 1994 black Jeep Grand Cherokee have been seen since.

Searches by police and civilians turned up nothing. Police have treated the case as a homicide since her disappearance. Those close to Herron have come up with numerous benefits and advertising gimmicks to keep her name in the public eye. A $20,000 reward is posted.

Her husband, Jeff Herron, has been questioned by police who want him to take a second polygraph test, but he has refused, investigators said.

The e-mail that triggered the interest was among many messages to the site weekly from throughout the country, offering prayers and best wishes. It listed Miami, Fla., as the location of the sender, and asserted, "I am Audrey."

The writer thanked everyone "for looking for me. It's very comforting and flattering. Yes, I am safe and alive and loving every moment of life. I am going to return home shorty (sic). If you look for me again, I will flee. I want to be free, but I promise I will return home shorty (sic)." The writer drew a smiley face.

State Police traced the e-mail to Burlington, Ontario. The person who wrote it is a subscriber to Cogeco Cable Internet service, Fitzmaurice said. But State Police were unsuccessful in their subpoena for the cable company's records.

"We tried everything under the sun, and they wouldn't give (the subscriber's name) to us," the investigator said. The Canadian cable company refused to honor an out-of-country subpoena.

"Our last step is to apply through the Justice Department, using the Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty in an attempt to get information, and still there is no guarantee, and it would have to go before a magistrate there," Fitzmaurice said. It could take up to six months. So Ontario Provincial Police put out a news release.

I actually read her messageboard.. and this was a really big deal. theyve been tracking it. Im sure the person claiming to be her, didnt realize theres also two private detectives on that messageboard often,as well.
I have my own opinions about her case in general,but theyre bias so im keeping them to myself.

A relative of Herron went on Montel and asked Sylvia Brown what happened to Audrey. I apologize if these are inaccurate, but this is the gist of what she said. Brown claims that she's dead by a major road and some water. The Jeep has been disassembled by people from the city and sold off for parts.

I'll try to find more later on. I think there were a few more details given.

Sylvia thinks there were two people involved in Audrey's murder - she said Audrey is no longer alive. She said the two people bumped her vehicle from behind on purpose when Audrey turned right on the side road to home, just 12 miles from her work. She said Audrey got out of her vehicle when she was bumped and walked back to their vehicle - a blue van, the woman held a gun on her, Sylvia said she was killed by a gunshot and the man hid Audrey's car. Sylvia said it has been stripped down and is gone. She said the woman thought Audrey was messing around with her man and that Audrey knew her, the woman was wearing a flowered hat. She said the woman has a police record. She said Audrey's body is close by where the crime was committed, she died that night and she is by or in a pond.

Keep in mind, this is ALL gossip..but I'll tell you later why I believe it. If anyone knows the area, Im sure Amy does,its pretty bad. High crime ,lots of drugs. Its pretty much strong gossip that the husband had some type of drug activity..and either pissed off someone related,etc.
I believe it is a strong possibility because the husband refused lie detector tests. Hes not supportive in the public at all regarding raising money to help her. Every local retailer down there donates for her annual bike run,etc. Obviously I dont think the family would even confirm that its gossip..because they want to preserve a strong base for people to get informed. If you take a look on her site,and read through the messageboards,however,you can tell some family members are starting to voice his lack of participation in everything,etc.

The clincher for me,was that i was telling my best friend how pissed off it made me,and how I didnt want to throw money at the issue..but help. She told me an older guy(50+) she dealt with in that area one day,basically told her it was big drug related,and it was common knowledge. I asked her why she didnt report it,even if it was gossip, and she said" you know how catskill is, Im not getting involved" Seems thats the common theme. Its sad. I hope they bring her home.Her kids post on that website..and its heartbreaking.

I have been without a personal computer for months until now. Surfing the web for new articles/boards on Audrey I found this discussion. I'm glad to see that others are still interested in her case & to see that some of you are locally based. It has been very hard to keep her case alive through the media unless there is an event or lead. The e-mail lead is the first to come up in sometime. Thank you, Cutesunshine for posting the Times Union article here. There are several articles & video to view on Audrey's website for others to read. We believe it to be a hoaxe but are happy to see that police are following it as diligently as they are.
Questions & comments about Montel: I was there & believe that Sylvia is a person who means well but as far as Audrey's case she offered nothing solid & in fact when speaking to her it seemed she was just pulling at straws. We were grateful for the appearance on Montel & were just hoping it would lead to better media coverage but it did not. We try all the time to get other shows to air her story but have had no luck yet.
We try to keep her website as updated as possible with anything new occuring within the case & any events we try to do. The site is very extensive & there are many photos, clips & articles provided about anything done to help find Audrey as well as info links to others who are missing to help them.

You guys should all know that if Audrey's name is on the web anywhere....Marie finds it...she always does! She will go to the ends of the earth for Audrey and has been beating her head against the wall for help since Audrey vanished.....I am a friend of Marie's and I also knew Audrey....Marie is optimistic and does not want to think her hubby had anything to do with Audrey being gone....
But I am like the girl who posted on here and expressed the opinion that Jeff has something to do with it, I feel the same way she does. What pees me off is...if this is the case he is getting away with it.
Vehicles and people DO NOT VANISH into thin air. Someone out there knows something, there has to be a way to find out.
As for psychics Marie and I had a ton of them, all for naught....lots of $$ spent and no good answers, we tracked down CourtTV psychic detectives, well known media psychics and even some off the web all roads leading to no where....not that we would not be willing to talk to another, we would listen to anyone with an idea at this point.

Those of us who knew Audrey agree that her disappearance involved foul play. If you knew her, you would say the same. As you said, "it isn't possible".
Who & how or why for that matter, could do this has torn a family apart & left a whole community searching for answers. Above all rumors & speculation surrounding the case it still leaves us "not knowing" & as you said, "not knowing is what's eating her friends and family"
We are just hoping that more interest in her case will arise & attract the larger media needed to put pressure on those who may have been involved. Laci Peterson's case was worldwide within hours & the media frenzy that followed was the reason Amber Frey came forth...if you recall, it was days before she knew but because it was kept to highly covered it got to her & eventually her coming forward led to his arrest. We had local coverage of Audrey only in the beginning & by the time we were able to reach national coverage with the appearance we made on Montel we were just another story. We need to get to Dateline or Oprah. Somebody willing to put this case back in the spotlight.

It is like shouting out loud for help and no one can hear....without the attention this case deserves I feel it will forever be unsolved and someone will get away with murder.

It's a very compelling article, but I wouldn't go so far as to lose hope, I suppose. Maybe she had some internal conflicts that would cause her to leave. People on here have said that her husband was heavy into drugs and whatnot, maybe she was tired of it or had a feeling something would happen. On one hand, I can understand the reality of the situation, chances are she's dead. But on the other hand, if I were a close friend of her that knew her better than most people, I'd never give up hope without knowing any further facts.

The company, Cogeco Cable is still unwilling to cooperate with authorities.... :angry: After a post on Audrey's guestbook about getting a petition together I thought that we should start writing to this company.


Dear Cogeco Cable,
I am writing in hopes that you may help resolve a lead that was tracked back to your company regarding the case of U.S. missing woman, Audrey May Herron.
In October 2004 a subsriber to your company posted as Audrey on her website. Since doing so both LE here in NY & authorities there in Canada have tried to retrieve that subscriber's name to put an end to the thought of it actually being Audrey. You have refused this plea due to the privacy issues of your company.
There is a family here & children, Audrey's children, who hold out hope that this will lead us to Audrey. What your company is doing for the sake of someone's privacy is cruel. You have stated in papers therein that you have spoken to the subscriber but are still unwilling to reveal them to authorities. If in fact this person is Audrey or even if it not, I am begging you to please cooperate & help us put an end to what seems to be another journey of heartache & anguish for this family to go through. And for what? The privacy of a person who thought it to be "funny" to claim they were this missing mother of three?
I am appealing to you as a human, not a company. I am begging you to help us put an end to this unknowing nightmare. This latest lead in her case has brought the family more undue stress & grief not needed.
Think to yourselves how it would feel if it was your daughter, mother, wife or friend. Would you not plead for the same. This family has suffered through almost 3 years of hell. Do you really think the privacy issue is that important?

Its retarded to say it... but if someone hired a drama filled PR person. this case would be all over the news. Even though I think the person who wrote that email is a horrible human being to do that to the family, it also added exposure to the case.
If someone was out there being dramatic and screaming and demanding answers on behalf of this family, there would be news crews for miles.
Personally ,I think Lacey Petersons case got the exposure it did,because her mother spoke so boldly and without reserve. Her statement to the media the day Scott Peterson got arrested, was so compelling, I was glued to the TV to see what she would say next.
Thats what this case needs, to get out there.

Authorities both in New York & Canada are now working together to track this latest lead in the case.

Family & friends are hopeful of this recent news in that new leads may be generated to help find her but are skeptic that the posting is in fact Audrey given feelings towards her not being someone who would leave behind her three children, husband or family of her own free will. Hope is maintained by many of her safe return & that this latest coverage may evolve to more viable leads to keep this case going & bring this young mother home. Boxes of 100 will include profiles of several missing individuals ready for mailing through the U.S. Post Office.

Michelle plans to market the envelopes to local businesses, organizations and individuals at a price of $3 per box. All proceeds will go directly to the NYS “Remorial” for missing persons building fund, a project created by Mary & Doug Lyall, parents of Suzanne Lyall who has been missing since March 2, 1998.

The "Remorial" is a setting where families and others affected by the loss of a missing person can visit at any time to reflect and remember. The "Remorial" structure will include glass blocks, each etched with the name of a missing person. It will be illuminated to convey the message of hope of a safe return. Late last summer through the idea of a young mind at work a project to put Audrey's reward info on area shopping carts was put forth. It was the latest idea to keep her face out there like past projects including a billboard, yard signs & also having her appear on the hood of a race car. The idea was proposed by a 14 year old who knew Audrey while standing at the deli of a local Price Chopper & with the help of Brian Crusch & Cart-TV Advertising, his idea came to life. It was anticipated the ads would run in October & November but were delayed & ran in January & February. Audrey's information & photo appeared on 35 carts in each of three Price Chopper locations surrounding the area where she disappeared. The company that helped make this possible has agreed to circulate the ads to carts even longer if the space is not being used.
The project was featured in area papers & on the local news.

It is our hope that someone out there will see her & come forward to help us find her. Our efforts continue to be made possible through the generosity of a community of kind hearts both near & far to help us in our quest to bring Audrey home.

On May 20, 2005 it will have been 1000 days since Audrey disappeared. We would like to ask you to help us in lighting 1000 candles for Audrey that will be placed near her remembrance bench & lit as a symbol that we have not forgotten each day that has passed without her in our lives.
We ask that you please send a free standing candle & any message you may have for Audrey & her family.
It is our hope that we can light 1000 candles, one for each day that Audrey has been missing. We are hoping to receive one from each state in the United States and would be especially thrilled to have candles from other countries as well. I have a few questions

Are the state police aware of the drug angle? I had never heard of that angle before. I hope it is just gossip but the police should check it out.

Are there any areas specifically you would like searched? I suppose private properties need permission to be search though. But if you would like volunteers let us know.

wanted to share with you a few thoughts, & some of the events of Audrey's 1000 Lights of Hope Vigil, to which, without your help, would not have been possible.

It was a day like no other...With the help of newfound friend, Josie,(who I wish i met 3 years ago-She ran her tail off with the rest of us trying to get things done for this event...), Chris, Audrey's step-mom, Jeanie, My son, Justin, Maria, Katie Z., Jim Viola & son, Michael & my daughter, Katie...arrived 3 hours early to set up the amazing display of over 2,000 candle of Hope sent from around the world...

Imagine if you can, the beauty of the flame from a candle...it lights the way, when there is darkness. Imagine if you can, the sight of over 2,000 candles lit in Hopes of a friend who cannot seem to find her way home to all those who love & miss her.
I need not imagine for I saw & felt the warmth, strength & Hope from these lights.
There were many of you here, from this board, along with hundreds more from around the world that made surviving yet another day, the 100th-not knowing what happened to my friend, Audrey, possible.
The amazement in her little boys eyes as the flames flickered & led all who attended to her remembrance bench was heartbreaking & bittersweet...to watch both Quinn & 'lil Katie scurry through to pick out candles for their Mommie to bring home with them was a feeling no words could describe. For their innocence keeps them in that "comfort" zone that as time goes by will disapate into the lingering knowledge we as adults know the harder version of what it truly means that their mommie is missing. I thank God, they have not reached that & pray that they do not have to in hopes that we find her first.
Aud's eldest, Sonsia, was & is an amazing heart in search of her Mother & was truly showing her strength as she always does...just like her Mom.
Aud's sister-in-law, Michelle read a heartwrenching dedication poem for 3 solar lights that each of Audrey's children put near the bench...a symbol of an "eternal flame". A symbol of Faith, Hope & Love.
Longtime friend, Corrina, read an amazing poem written by my good friend Maria...through tears...Maria~ You are my backbone, my strength & my best friend to whom through all of this have remained steady right along with me...
I was especially warmed by the show of support for not only Aud but of the families of others missing as we displayed the many candles sent by these families sharing our same heartbreak. Those in attendance read & saw each & I reminded them as I spoke the words Sarah Teague, mother of missing Heather, sent to us...you could see in their eyes...the empathy & shock, for lack of a better word, that so many more remain missing.
Audrey's family, all in attendance, were I believe, very thankful of all the love & support sent, all were amazed as well, with the lighting of these candles for Audrey. We needed this. It becomes much harder as each day passes with no word. Hope tends to fade & these lights, lights sent from around the globe, brought back to all of us that Hope. That hope that is so desperately clung to by each of us.
Many families conveyed their wish to be with us & we were comforted by each knowing that we, in lighting these candles for their loved ones, share their loss with them as they do with ours...Mary & Doug Lyall, Suzie's parents made special efforts after attending the Bike Ride for Missing Children, to join us. They are two amazing pillars of strength. After my daughter read a piece of history on Eaton Patz they helped the children in attendence in lighting a special display of candles in honor of upcoming Nat'l Missing Children's Day, as their Suzie falls under that of still being considered a child. Each candle in the display was a child missing here in NY. The display was made by my good friend, Maria...It was beautiful. Jim Viola, Patricia's husband, drove in with their son, Michael from NJ...he arrived early (as usual) to lend his hand in the setting up of the pathway & display. Shooting video for us & just being there with us once again...He truly keeps me going when I get down...he always supports everything we do. He has become a true friend within our tragedies. As the vigil began, my heart was pounding as my good friend, Louise seemed lost in White Hall NY somewhere...She giving us our first light of hope for Audrey & for her dear nephew, lorne, was to light that candle...Louise, although running late due to attending Timothy Youngs funeral stayed her course & arrived just after the lighting but I was so very glad to see her. Hugs from her are just the best...She brought with her, for me, a gift which brought me to tears. A beautiful stained glass candle holder in the color of lavender~ my own light of hope...and a "Beanie Bear" holding lavender flowers & a wonderful card--For a Good friend~...Through the search for my friend, I have been given the gift of new friends...who, in Audrey's absence have kept me going...You all know who you are...
We re-lit candles for her & then with all the kids in hand, her boys, my Katie, Aud's Sonsia & a friend, Priscilla went to the local diner...As we sat there remembering each, Lorne & Audrey through the eyes of the children telling their memories of certain events each had...I watched...Sonsia looks more each day like Audrey & I can't help but feel guilty she is missing out on the laughter & amazement that comes with each visit I have with her...She should be there...like old times after a day of shopping or a movie...
I want each of you to know that what you did for Audrey & her family as well as myself will not soon be forgotten...the feeling of Hope given will remain in my heart as we continue our search to bring Aud home...God Bless each one of you...

I think you misunderstood what I was trying to say. I think it should stay on top too, it had nothing to do with that, I said something because it said "New Information on Audreys Disappearance", so when I saw a post from the same day I looked at it, I thought new news had occured, and checked, but it hadnt, which is why I said the title should be renamed so that if there ARE any new clues, it can have a post of its own, stating that. Latest news on aud's case...another email...Silent witness has supposedly signed Aud's guest book again...State boys are checking this one as well as the canada one. We have tracked it to NY City. Not sure if it is a hoaxe or not but will keep everyone updated if anything comes of it.
