She should have written.... since you still have to be here tomorrow at least you'll be comfortable when you drive in with all the retards that forget how to drive in the snow.

What can we say, it happens. The storm looked as though it would nail the area with a decent snowfall but Mother Nature had another idea instead.

So why hardly any snow? There were several reasons. First of which the storm moved farther north than expected.

Secondly, that caused warmer air to push into the Capital Region. It wasn't at the surface, as the temps dropped to around freezing early in the morning. It was aloft, about 2000-3000 feet above the ground, and it melted the snow into rain on its way down....of which it was a soaker.

Third, we expected the warm layer to break up enough so that the snow would be able to make it to the ground, but that obviously didn't happen.

Finally, the two storms didn't phase as expected. The coastal low didn't combine with an upper level low to our west to produce a steady snow during the day Thursday. That meant that the "second punch" expected never materialized.

In a situation like this, areas where the warm layer can't overtake the cold air can see a sudden changeover to heavy wet snow. That was the case over the North Country where 7-12" of snow fell. In fact it was only a matter of 15 miles between Saratoga Springs and Queensbury which made the difference from 1" to as much as 8" of snow. Quite remarkable.
