SARATOGA SPRINGS -- A 12-year-old girl walking to school Friday morning escaped serious injury when an SUV struck her, pinning her underneath, city police said.
"The girl was very, very lucky," Detective Lt. Gary Forward said.
Lucca D'Aleo was on the sidewalk at 7:52 a.m. when the two-vehicle collision sent the SUV off the road, Forward said.
A 2003 Honda driven east on York Avenue by Arthur McCann, 78, of High Rock Avenue, collided with an SUV southbound on East Avenue driven by Megan Hennessey, 37, of Mockingbird Court, Waterford, police said.
The crash sent Hennessey's 2002 Chevrolet Trailblazer onto the sidewalk, pinning D'Aleo in the front yard of a home at East and York avenues, police said.
The girl was freed immediately by the Saratoga Springs Fire Department and airlifted by a State Police helicopter to Albany Medical Center, where she was treated for minor scrapes and bruises, police said.
Police did not know which school she attends.
McCann, who was able to walk after the crash, was found to have suffered a broken neck, police said. He was taken to Saratoga Hospital and then sent to Albany Med. His condition is unknown, police said.
Hennessey was taken to Saratoga Hospital with minor injuries, police said. Both drivers were wearing seat belts. The investigation continues, police said.
