ATLANTA -- A Fulton County judge, a sheriff's deputy and a court reporter were fatally wounded and another deputy shot Friday at the courthouse before the suspect fled from the scene and carjacked a motorist.

Superior Court Judge Rowland Barnes, a female court reporter and a sheriff's deputy were pronounced dead after they were transported to Grady Memorial Hospital for treatment.

Police were conducting a massive search for the suspect, who fled in a vehicle described as a green Honda Accord. Authorities identified him as Brian Nichols, 33.

Two deputies were rushed to Grady for treatment, but one later died. The condition of the second deputy was not immediately available.

A reporter for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution was also injured during the incident.

Authorities said the reporter, identified as Don O'Briant, was pistol-whipped and assaulted during an attempted carjacking while the suspect was trying to get away.

The AJC reporter was taken to the hospital but his condition was not immediately available. The suspect fled from the scene in a vehicle.

Not really sure.
It was hard to sift through everything being said.

They were talking about the Judge being killed and how I guess the deputy who was also killed was next to this Nichols person and I think what they said was he wasn't in handcuffs (big no-no) and before they knew what happened he must have reached and got the deputys gun

ATLANTA (Reuters) - A man on trial for rape grabbed a deputy's gun and opened fire in an Atlanta courthouse on Friday, killing a judge and two other people before fleeing, authorities said.

Superior Court Judge Rowland Barnes and an unidentified court reporter died from gunshot wounds, Georgia Lt. Gov. Mark Taylor said shortly after the 9 a.m. shooting at Fulton County Courthouse.

A sheriff's deputy also was killed and another wounded, Atlanta Police spokesman John Quigley said. The deputy who lost her gun was shot but expected to survive, he said.

The suspect, identified by police as Brian Nichols, 33, escaped the court and then carjacked at least one vehicle, shooting at a sheriff's deputy outside, witnesses and police said.

Across Georgia, electronic highway messages were being posted with information on the vehicle Nichols was believed to have taken. About 30 schools in Atlanta were locked down while authorities searched for the suspect.

The shooting occurred less than two weeks after the husband and mother of a federal judge in Chicago were shot to death.

Renee Rockwell, a defense lawyer, said she saw deputies running with their guns drawn as she walked into the courthouse in downtown Atlanta. "They said 'the defendant got the deputy's gun and shot the judge,"' Rockwell said.

Nichols was on trial before Barnes for rape, assault, kidnapping and several other felonies. One deputy may have been shot outside the courthouse while trying to apprehend Nichols, who also pistol-whipped a journalist during his escape.

"Outside, there was a deputy down. Apparently he ran after the defendant and was trying to get him," Rockwell said.

Police said they did not know what had provoked the shooting.

Nichols was being retried on rape, kidnapping and other charges after a hung jury last week. A juror described his behavior in the courtroom as intense.

"Every time any of us looked up we saw him looking for our reaction, which had made us a little nervous," juror James Bailey told CNN.

Police in Chicago said on Friday a review of evidence has proven that a man who committed suicide was the one who killed the husband and mother of a federal judge there following a lengthy medical malpractice legal battle, and that he acted alone.

DULUTH, GA. - A 911 call from a woman who had been held hostage for hours in her own apartment ended a daylong manhunt for a rape suspect accused of shooting a judge and two others at a courthouse and then later killing an immigration agent as he eluded authorities.

The suspect, 33-year-old Brian Nichols, set off a massive manhunt in the Atlanta area after he allegedly overpowered a court deputy Friday, took her gun and fatally shot three people, including the judge on his rape case.

During the night, Nichols approached a woman as she was entering her suburban Atlanta apartment and introduced himself as a wanted man, authorities said.

“It’s my understanding that he had told her, ’If you do what I say, I won’t kill you,”’ Georgia Bureau of Investigation Director Vernon Keenan said.

The woman either escaped or was allowed to leave and called 911. A SWAT team gathered outside and Nichols turned himself in after watching the manhunt on television, Gwinnett County Police Chief Charles Walters said.

“He literally waved a white flag or a T-shirt and came out to our folks,” Walters said.

The arrest came hours after the body of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agent David Wilhelm was discovered shot to death about 15 miles away at an upscale townhouse complex. His blue pickup truck, pistol and badge were missing.

FBI Spokesman Steve Lazarus said Nichols is a suspect in that shooting, and police said the truck was found at a location other than the complex where Nichols was arrested, but did not elaborate.

Nichols was taken into federal custody.

ATLANTA — A surveillance camera captured Brian G. Nichols' surprise attack on a Fulton County sheriff's deputy, but no one in the control center noticed the assault and sent help, said a law enforcement official who viewed the security tape.

The camera, one of more than 40 stationed through the Fulton County courthouse, showed 6-foot-1-inch Nichols overwhelming Deputy Cynthia Hall and escaping with her gun. Hall was escorting Nichols to a holding cell before his rape trial resumed.

Moments after the attack, which occurred before 9 a.m. Friday, witnesses say Nichols made his way through the courthouse and gunned down a judge, a court reporter and one of Hall's fellow deputies. Hours later he killed a federal agent.

Hall remained in critical condition with severe head injuries at Grady Memorial Hospital.

"It's not just horrible, it was preventable," said Senior Superior Court Judge Philip Etheridge.
