Griffin gets laughs with naughty gossip
By STEVE BARNES
ALBANY … What’s so deliciously refreshing about Kathy Griffin is that she truly does not
seem to give a fig about offending powerful people with speculative naughty gossip about them.
There she was on the stage of the Palace Theatre on Friday night, famous enough to have sold out the place and yet still gossiping as if she were just any normal mouthy gal
hanging out with friends … as if she were below, in her famous self-characterization, a D-list celebrity.
Most boldfaced-name gossip is reported by the media, tabloid and mainstream, and what top-tier actors and musicians actually think of one another is left to celeb-watchers to discern from afar, as if interpreting hieroglyphs on the moon through a telescope.
Do we ever really know what Brad Pitt thinks of Tom Cruise? Or what happened when Meryl Streep met Nicole Kidman? Or when any of Colin Farrell’s exes run into one another at the grocery store? No. Our celebrity opinions are filtered through their careful spokespeople.
And then there’s Kathy Griffin. The flame-haired comic, whose most conventional claim to fame was the mediocre sitcom “Suddenly Susan'’ all those years ago, has become, on the strength of her Bravo network reality series and comedy specials, something of a
household name. Yet she’s still like your best gossipy galpal. She tells you exactly what she thinks.
During her long show at the Palace on Friday, Griffin, wearing jeans and a tank top, dished breathlessly about Cruise and his new “Asian-looking'’ baby, Barbara Walters, Rosie O’Donnell, Oprah Winfrey, Jessica Simpson. She’d start a story, think of another story, then three more, and finally get back to saying something outrageous about her (losing) appearance on the Emmy Awards telecast.
Thoughts and slams and salacious anecdotes seem to spill compulsively from Griffin, whether she’s taking delight in “American Idol'’ alum Clay Aiken’s non-admission admission of his homosexuality this week to Diane Sawyer on “Good Morning America'’ or reporting what an ex-Scientologist friend told her about its inner workings. It truly seems as if Griffin is just the worst office gossip jabbering at the water cooler, and yet she’s telling laugh-out-loud-funny stories about Larry King or being banned from most
TV talk shows or, more confessionally, how she’s having a hard time dating again after the breakup of her marriage.
Griffin loves her gay male audience, and they love her back. During one anecdote, when Griffin realized that perhaps not everyone might be familiar with the players or the plot, she paused and said, before delivering contextual information, “For those heterosexuals who stumbled into the audience tonight …'’
But she’s also completely mainstream, a happy gossip talking unapologetically about the foibles of fame. She doesn’t tell jokes, and she isn’t even an especially astute cultural observer. But she’s mouthy and funny and, at time, convulsively hilarious. That she also chose to have lunch on Friday at the Farmer Boy Diner on Central Avenue in Colonie and tried to give the waitress free tickets … only to be turned down by the owner, who said he could not spare his staffer … makes Griffin’s combination of fame and everygalness even more satisfying.

I've seen Larry twice so far. He's freakin hilarious in person. I didn't get tickets for this years show. Maybe next year.

Did he do 3 shows last year also?
Yup. He had three shows last year. They were all sold out. My wife and I went. I don't think I've ever seen so much flannel in one building before in my life! The first time we saw him was at Northern Lights in Clifton Park.

I can only take him in small doses. I prefer Ron White over Larry.
You have to like real twisted humor to like Ron White. He reminds me a lot of Andrew Dice Clay. White must be drunk every show. He drinks a ton of scotch (I think) and smokes cigars like he'll never see one again!
