Symphony looking to bring Amy Grant to Civic Center
Concert would raise money for endowment fund

GLENS FALLS -- The Glens Falls Symphony is getting into concert promotion to boost its endowment fund.

The symphony, in cooperation with the city and a Canadian motorcoach tour company, has tentatively booked Amy Grant to appear with the symphony May 18 at the Glens Falls Civic Center, said Robert Rosoff, the symphony's executive director.

Grant has recorded numerous albums over a 25-year career that began when she recorded the contemporary Christian hit "Father's Eyes" in 1979.

She also has recorded pop records and is the host of the NBC reality television show "Three Wishes." "It's my understanding that it's in the preliminary planning stages," confirmed Civic Center Executive Director Suzanna Bernd.

The planning became more certain Wednesday when the Greater Glens Falls Development Corp. board authorized a $35,000, no-interest loan for up-front costs to book and promote the concert.

Rosoff said the symphony could repay the loan by March or April, once advance tickets are sold.

Ticket prices have not been set.

Working with Pathway Tours, the symphony expects to draw in about 45 motorcoach tour groups that would take in other activities in the area as well , Rosoff said. "We see an economic impact of about $1,000,000 -- rooms, sales tax, shopping tours," he said.

The symphony also plans to promote the concert through area churches, with churches receiving a commission on every ticket sold, he said.

Rosoff estimated the symphony could net $100,000 for its endowment fund with a turn out of 4,500 people.

Part of that would be because symphony members will waive their typical performance fee, he said.

Rosoff's contact with Grant came through the American Symphony Orchestra League, Bernd said. Grant has taken a keen interest in helping symphonies.

Earlier this month, the Nashville Symphony named the performance platform at the Schermerhorn Symphony Center after Grant, recognizing her long-time support, dating back to when the orchestra faced bankruptcy in the 1980s.

"She single-handedly paid off the debt, which was about $1 million," Alan Valentine, the orchestra's president and chief executive officer, said in a press release.

Bopping: Doodlebops concert draws more than 3,000 to Civic Center

GLENS FALLS -- Cole Carpenter didn't allow an intermission during the Doodlebops concert at Glens Falls Civic Center to keep him from dancing Saturday afternoon.

Once band members Deedee, Rooney and Mo Doodle vanished behind the curtain, signaling the start of a 20-minute break, Cole, 6, continued spinning and skipping, arms swinging wildly, in front of the stage.

Maybe it was the music, which continued playing for a while, keeping him going, or the numerous dancing children around him.

No matter the reason, Cole, of Queensbury, was having a good time.

"Their music is so cool," he said once he stopped dancing to accompany his father, Peter Carpenter, to the concession stand for a drink.

Carpenter said he has taken Cole to other concerts before, but that the Doodlebops provide an especially entertaining performance because they interact with children.

"I'm really impressed," Carpenter said. "It's one of the best shows I've seen here."

Terri Bryant of Ballston Spa was taking pictures of her grandchildren, 6-year-old Cora and 4-year-old Coby Bryant, who were showing their dance moves during the intermission.

"They love music and dancing," she said. "I think I like (the show) as much as they do. I want to get up and dance."

The Doodlebops were in town for back-to-back performances Saturday, as part of their first-ever U.S. tour. Glens Falls was one of more than 75 stops for the children's band, which includes positive social values and messages in its music. They perform again at 1 and 4 p.m. today at The Palace Theatre in Albany. (Call the box office at 476-1000.)

More than 3,000 people attended the shows Saturday, said Civic Center Executive Director Suzanna Bernd.

Mary Dickinson and her granddaughter, 4-year-old Claire Snowball, were dancing together near a concession stand shortly before the show resumed. Dickinson, of South Glens Falls, said Claire watches the Doodlebops television program Sunday mornings. She said the Doodlebops encourage children to be nice to each other.

"I like the message they have for the kids," she said.

Few arrests from GF concert

Friday, February 23, 2007 6:05 AM EST

GLENS FALLS -- Glens Falls Police reported a few arrests from Thursday night's Red, Black and Blue Festival at Glens Falls Civic Center.

One person who was ejected from the Civic Center during the heavy metal concert but refused to leave was charged with disorderly conduct, while a couple of others were charged with having open containers of alcohol outside the center, said Glens Falls Police Sgt. John Winchell.

Snow likely kept the attendance numbers down, police said.

"We didn't have anything big," he said.

Winchell said the city's bar district was busy after the concert, but no other problems were reported.

Civic Center books another multi-act rock show

GLENS FALLS -- On the eve of the multiple-band concert featuring Evanescence, Chevelle and Finger Eleven later this week, the Glens Falls Civic Center announced it will stage a four-band show May 11 with Breaking Benjamin, Three Days Grace, Puddle of Mudd and Red.

Breaking Benjamin and platinum-selling Canadian quartet Three Days Grace will be the co-headliners, with Puddle of Mudd and the Nashville, Tenn., quintet Red also appearing on the bill.

"That's pretty exciting. Who would expect a big show like that in (Glens Falls)?" said Jerry Clark of Schroon Lake, walking along Glen Street on Monday afternoon.

Jim Duntley, who accompanied Clark on his visit to the city, was particularly impressed the concert will feature Puddle of Mudd. The band first hit the national airwaves in 2001 with their major label release, "Come Clean." The hit singles "Control" and "She Hates Me" followed.

Not everyone was similarly impressed.

"I remember their songs. Puddle of Mudd were like one-hit wonders," said Adam Powers, standing inside Red's Underground music store. "I didn't even know they were making music anymore."

Led by singer, songwriter and guitarist Benjamin Burnley, Pennsylvania-based Breaking Benjamin first registered on the public radar with its 2002 hit, "Polyamorous." Their latest album, "Phobia," spawned the popular songs "The Diary of Jane," and "Breath." Three Days Grace issued its self-titled debut in 2003. Their most recent, "One-X," was issued in 2006.

Tickets for the concert will go on sale at 10 a.m. Saturday. Tickets are $30 general admission (floor) and $25 reserved (arena seating) and can be purchases at the Glens Falls Civic Center Box Office in person or by phone at 798-0202, and all Ticketmaster locations including www.ticketmaster.com or by calling (518) 476-1000, or (802) 862-5300.

Band added to Civic Center concert

GLENS FALLS -- A rock concert featuring Hinder, Papa Roach and Buckcherry slated to hit the Glens Falls Civic Center on Sept. 11 has added another band to its lineup.

Long Island's nu-metal rocker's Revelation Theory will join the bill known as "The Badboys of Rock Tour," an act which promises to make the show "more bad," according to the press release.

Revelation Theory is a four piece outfit whose debut album, "Truth is Currency" peaked at #5 on the Billboard charts since its release in fall, 2006.

Tickets are still available for the show, with general admission tickets selling for $32.50 and arena seating for $27.50. Tickets can be purchased at the Glens Falls Civic Center Box Office in person or by phone at (518) 798-0202, and at all Ticketmaster locations including www.ticketmaster.com, (518) 476-1000, and (802) 862-5300.
